Book Description

14 Feb 1977

Anna was four years old when Fynn, then only 16 himself, found her wandering round London’s Docklands one foggy night in the 1930s. Badly neglected and abandoned by her parents, he took her home to be cared for by his own family.

The impact of this extraordinary child on Fynn, his friends and the people in their neighbourhood was to be immense. Nobody who met Anna could remain the same: this intelligent, lively, precocious chatterbox had an outlook on life which completely undercut adult pretensions and illusions.

Anna’s influence continues today. Anyone dipping into her thought-processes falls under the spell of her luminous innocence, wisdom and intimate relationship with ‘Mister God’.

Product Description

‘The explosive individuality of Anna is not sentimentally touching but sometimes almost frightening. I hope that a new edition will introduce a new generation to this formidable and astonishing figure.’ Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury

From the Back Cover

Fynn found Anna wandering the streets of East London in the 1930s and, unable to discover where she lived, took her home to live with his mother.

Fynn would spend his evening talking and playing with Anna; they chatted about life, particularly science and mathematics, and Anna would tell him about her conversations with 'Mister God', to whom she poured out all her thoughts and troubles. Anna's innocent but insightful world- view caused Fynn to reassess his own.

'Mister God, this is Anna'-an all-time classic – is the story of Anna's short life and the liberating effect she had on her friend Fynn.

"Here is a book which is a pearl of great price. It will mean everything . Truth, beauty, and goodness, to those who understand… a heavenly book, rooted in earth."

"Beautifully written; most moving. The book is superbly produced to offset Papas' brilliant drawings".

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart warming 11 Sep 2001
I've never read a book that has been so heart warming, so thought provoking and provides such a simplistic and innocent view of life and love. I've also never read a book that has reduced me to tears.
The true story is fantastic and I defy you to read this and not be uplifted by Anna's persona. We're all nothing but dots at the end of the day (you'll have to read the book). I loved her impish nature and her questioning of when the River Thames becomes known as the River Thames. I don't know the answer to this question but I know the answer isn't 3.
If I achieved half the happiness in my life, as Anna did I'd be very pleased.
I don't believe in God but I do believe in love, which is all this book is about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful little book. 4 Jan 2003
By A Customer
This is a delightful book about an inquisitive little girl who saw a lot of things in a very different way than most of us are taught to see. It doesn't matter one bit if you agree with any of Anna's unusual points of view, it's just so refreshingly interesting. (Although you often end up thinking "Humm, I've never thought of it that way, but she does have a point!")
The author says he was lucky to have met Anna. I think she was lucky to have found him. He recognised something rare and beautiful in Anna, and had the intelligence to allow it to develop and grow.
This is classed as a spiritual book - which it no doubt is - but it is absolutely not a "preachy" book. Suitable for thinkers of all ages, children and adult alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suitable for everyone 12 May 2003
By A Customer
I have known Christian youth leaders, Wiccan high priests, and "ordinary" people who have all read and loved this book.
I first read it 10 years ago, and i re-read it often. I'm on my third copy, because it tends to go "missing", but it's worth re-buying every time.
This book will encourage anyone to get out of their box, and at times, will shake you to the core. A 5 year old taught me more in an hour or two than some people have in years.

There is no way that someone could read this book and not enjoy it. It is beautiful, touching and tender and almost impossible not to fall in love with both Anna and Fynn. I must have read this book 50 times and I still cry every time I get to the end. It is a really fantastic book.

5.0 out of 5 stars thought-provoking 23 April 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
the fact that this is a true story really struck me, as i didn't know this until after i'd read it. this is an amazing book, really thought-provoking. alternately emotional, dramatic and hilarious. anna is such a complex character, you will want to read this again and again. this is a particularly cute edition, imported from america, which is a handy pocket-size.
