4.0 out of 5 stars An electro-pop delight, 20 Aug 2006

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
A treat for Postal Service fans while they continue to itch waiting for that elusive follow-up to 'Give Up'. James Figurine is the alter-ego of Jimmy Tamborello, also known as Dntel but best known as one of half of that band (the other being Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie). Making an album under such a guise might seem like a way of saying 'this is experimental tosh, please don't come near it', but this is actually an impressive album of electronica with the odd pop melody to back it up. There's no killer 'Such Great Heights'-style single, but the likes of opener '55566688833' and 'All The Way To China', which boasts Kings Of Convenience man Erlend Oye on vocals, are fantastic both for their electro textures and supreme catchiness. 'Pretend It's A Race And I'm On Your Side' and 'You Again' are similarly impressive soundscapes with cut-and-paste female vocals (the latter from Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis). While this isn't (and isn't intended to be) a follow-up to either 'Give Up' or Dntel's classic 'Life Is Full Of Possibilities', it's more solid stuff from one of the most talented people in electronica.
