Synopsis

Frank Darabont (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE GREEN MILE) serves as director, writer, and producer of THE MIST, an adaptation of Stephen King's classic novella. After a vicious storm wreaks havoc in their small town in Maine, artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) heads out to the town supermarket for some much-needed supplies with his young son, Billy (Nathan Gamble), and his neighbour, Norton (Andre Braugher), in tow. Their trip soon turns to terror when a menacing white mist settles in, leaving this group of locals and out-of-towners fighting for survival against an unknown, bloodthirsty enemy. When the local religious zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) begins to convince the group that the mist is punishment from God, Drayton and his cohorts realize that they may be trapped inside with an enemy just as dangerous as whatever is lurking outside.

Tension runs high in this tale as the trapped group faces difficult moral decisions. Should they stay and wait out the terror, or make a break for it and risk suffering a terrible fate? Is the eerie mist the will of God, an experiment from the local military base gone awry, or, maybe, a freak natural disaster? Without modern conveniences and the normal conventions and rules to guide them, the group is easily swayed by the loudest opinion. Will they save themselves at the expense of each other, or work as a team to save everyone? There is a decent amount of blood and gore for horror fans, some deadpan humour and just a hint of politics thrown in for good measure. Thomas Jane is a stoic leading man, but Frances Sternhagen and Toby Jones are more fun as unlikely heroes. Laurie Holden, Alexa Davalos, Bill Sadler and Jeffrey Demunn also star in this creepy tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb horror film, truly awesome on Blu Ray!, 20 Sep 2008
By P. I. Daverson "Capt. Tuna" (Northampton,England,) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I won't provide a synopsis as there is already one provided on Amazon.
I got this on US import in a 2 disc edition which contains the original version and a black and white version of the film (Frank Darabont wanted to release it in black and white but the studio was not happy with this idea, "the kids" don't "get" black and white apparently!!)and I would definitely recommend tracking this edition down. The film itself is most definitely a homage to '50's and '60's monster B-movies, and does not take itself too seriously, but is obviously made with great care and love by Darabont. The effects are not top notch, but that really doesn't matter as you find yourself so engrossed in the panic of the characters and their interactions with each other. It has been said many times, but the ending is incredibly, devastatingly bleak, which is a very refreshing change. This is also the best adaptation of a Stephen King horror story since The Shining (which sounds like not much, but I digress). The superb camerawork looks quite astounding on hi def and is definitely worth shelling out the extra for. All in all, superb!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very solid horror movie, 1 Feb 2009
Frank Darabont has made yet another fine stab of turning a Stephen King short story into a film. Instead of going for cheap scares and excessive gore, the film focusses on the interaction between the characters and how they deal with their predicament. Thomas Jane makes for an engaging lead character and the supporting cast (many of whom appeared in Darabont's Shawshank Redemption) are great too.
Imagine Cloverfield, but with a top quality director, no hand held camera and a script. That's pretty much what you get here.
And the ending is extremely memorable.

5.0 out of 5 stars something for everyone, intelligent and scary, 30 Oct 2009
By S. Graves "blacksquirrel" (portsmouth, uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I must admit that when I started watching this film I was expecting your run of the mill horror franchise. I could not have been more wrong, right from the start the least you could say is that 'The Mist' is a very very good horror B movie.... then you start noticing the subtle hints towards how various personalities work within stressful situations, leading up to the full blown social stereotypes, the religious nutter praying on peoples fear and weakness, and those willing to believe just because they are scared..... you are left thinking this film is very good...

Now, and I cant believe no one has really mentioned this, the ending is the icing on the cake, this is what makes the film five stars instead of four. I wont ruin it for you, but it was so amazing, so upsetting, so worrying and thought provoking that I immediately played it three times in a row. The use of a very famous Dead Can Dance track just adds to the ambiance.

Please please see this film and watch it till the very end.... you will have your heart in your throat, and just when you thinks its over..... it isn't....If you are a parent, you will be heartbroken at the decision taken, and the eventual outcome will rip your heart out!
