Synopsis
Frank Darabont (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE GREEN MILE) serves as director, writer, and producer of THE MIST, an adaptation of Stephen King's classic novella. After a vicious storm wreaks havoc in their small town in Maine, artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) heads out to the town supermarket for some much-needed supplies with his young son, Billy (Nathan Gamble), and his neighbour, Norton (Andre Braugher), in tow. Their trip soon turns to terror when a menacing white mist settles in, leaving this group of locals and out-of-towners fighting for survival against an unknown, bloodthirsty enemy. When the local religious zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) begins to convince the group that the mist is punishment from God, Drayton and his cohorts realize that they may be trapped inside with an enemy just as dangerous as whatever is lurking outside.

Tension runs high in this tale as the trapped group faces difficult moral decisions. Should they stay and wait out the terror, or make a break for it and risk suffering a terrible fate? Is the eerie mist the will of God, an experiment from the local military base gone awry, or, maybe, a freak natural disaster? Without modern conveniences and the normal conventions and rules to guide them, the group is easily swayed by the loudest opinion. Will they save themselves at the expense of each other, or work as a team to save everyone? There is a decent amount of blood and gore for horror fans, some deadpan humour and just a hint of politics thrown in for good measure. Thomas Jane is a stoic leading man, but Frances Sternhagen and Toby Jones are more fun as unlikely heroes. Laurie Holden, Alexa Davalos, Bill Sadler and Jeffrey Demunn also star in this creepy tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 24 Nov 2008
By Mr. M. Brindley (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this DVD with a little hesitence due to the somewhat hit and miss history of movie adaptations in the past. The name of Frank Darabont swung me in the end due to his stunning work 'The Green Mile' and 'Shawshank..'.I sat down on a sunday afternoon with a thought of hopefully just being entertained for a couple of hours,as a fan of of thoughtful horror i was not prepared for this at all.I am not going to spoil the plot for inquisitive buyers but suprisingly this got to me on an emotional level thanks to Frank Darabont sticking to his guns about an ending that will stay with me for some time.I beleive this to be a classic in the genre..it certainly makes alot of so called modern horror look frankly hopeless. The feeling that struck me and one which fascinated was the atmosphere of something H.P Lovecraft may have influenced..i enjoy reading his stories and was minded of 'The Call Of Cthulhu'not overtly but in the feeling of where the threat in the film has come from.
As i say no spoilers but the use of Dead Can Dance 'The Host Of Seraphim' in the last few scenes was inspired and heightened the emotional power this builds to.
I hope this will encourage you to view this film.It did not seem to get a well publicised release in the cinemas but dont be put off by this.If a story is more important to you than endless gore(there are some cracking set pieces though)This may be for you.I cant recommend this highly enough.A great piece of work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very atmospheric and a very decent adaption, 5 Nov 2008
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
`The Mist' is the movie adaption of the Stephen King novella of the same name and is directed by Frank Darabont, who also directed two of the best King adaptations - The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

The story begins when thick fog covers a small town in Maine (and maybe beyond) following a violent storm the night before. David and his son Billy head to the local supermarket to get some things to repair the damage to the house and are then trapped in the store with other shoppers as strange creatures from the mist are killing anyone who steps outside for too long.

I read the novella late last year and absolutely loved it, so couldn't wait to see this adaption. Also, as the film is from Darabont who did two of my favourite films of all time (King adaption or otherwise) I had very high expectations for this film. Fortunately, this film is a very good adaption and is definitely one of the best Stephen King films I've ever seen. The film captures the excitement and fear from the book perfectly and is very claustrophobic and dark. It's also pretty gory with some really good special effects. The creatures look good and are some of the better CGI monsters I've seen in recent years. Although they aren't too scary they look and move very realistically and are exactly as I'd pictured them looking when reading the book.

Acting all round, especially from Thomas Jane (who plays David), is excellent and the terror and confusion that they are all feeling comes across as very believable. Another particularly impressive performance is from Marcia Gay Harden who plays the deranged Mrs Carmody, who I guarantee you will hate when watching this film (the character, that is).

The one thing I didn't like about the book was that there was no real ending, leaving the reader guessing what happens next. In this movie it does have a proper ending and it will come as quite a shock whether you have read the book or not. Personally, I didn't actually like how it ended as it didn't feel like a Stephen King ending (you'll know what I mean when you see it) but it is still a lot better than how the book ended.

The picture and sound quality is very impressive on this DVD and the special features aren't bad either with a black and white version of the film, which is exactly the same as the original version but adds to the classic sci-fi/horror feel to the film, and some behind the scenes featurettes and a few trailers.

Overall this is a very impressive adaption that anyone who has read the book will appreciate and should enjoy. If you're unfamiliar with the Stephen King style of books and films you may find this a bit weird, but generally it is a very enjoyable and exiting film that most fans of the sci-fi and horror genres should like. If you have enjoyed films like War of the Worlds (both versions), The Fog, Silent Hill or any other of the many Stephen King films, I recommend this to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'The Mist '...Definitely NOT to be MISSED, 7 Feb 2009
Tremendous movie based on a Stephen King novella, and this 2 disc edit has some great special features ,theres a black n white version of the movie ,which gives it a nice old 'b' movie feel, and the documentaries give a great in-sight into the hard work it took to make the movie

The Mist is well acted ,directed and shot ,the story is absorbing and the SFX are superb, it's a very atmospheric and tense movie, but the main talking point is how the movie ends

Ask anybody that's ever seen 'The Mist'what they thought of it and the first thing that they will want to talk about is the ending , because the ending is jawdropping/shocking

Listening to a review on the radio about 'The Mist' , the reviewer was asked 'Whats so different about the ending? ,Does everybody die?.....It's worse than that!, was his reply

Buy it and find out ......you won't regret it!
