Synopsis
It's the wild frontier and anything goes, especially in the untamed territory of Montana. Tom Logan (Jack Nicholson) leads a gang of cattle thieves out for revenge when one of its members is hanged by wealthy rancher David Braxton. Braxton, however, has hired expert manhunter Lee Clayton (Marlon Brando) to stop the gang at any cost. Clayton is a crazed man, driven half mad by the loneliness of his profession, a man who will never stop until he has gotten his quarry. Tom Logan is not intimidated and confronts Clayton himself. THE MISSOURI BREAKS is another vivid anti-western from Penn. Like LITTLE BIG MAN, this film takes a hard look at what life was like in the wild West, keeping the characters real and the story intense. Marlon Brando gives an unnerving performance as the insane bounty hunter, and Nicholson is sympathetic as the young but wearied cattle rustler who is in love with his enemy's daughter. The production overcame many difficulties with weather and locations to create an entertaining Hollywood epic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great western film, 16 Aug 2007
By T. A. Underwood - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Unlike the first reviewer, i think this is one of the best westerns i have seen. It explores several themes including family loyalty, love, friendship and law and order versus criminality on the western frontier. The acting is great and all the characters have their appeal, with Tom Logans horse theif crew of Little Todd, Cal and Carry potraying the theme of friendship and lawlessness extemley well. The relationship between Tom and Jane is also an interesting sub-plot which starts off brilliantly when they first meet and go for a horseride together.

Unlike spaghetti westerns, or John Wayne westerns, this film really taps into the characterisation of the frontier inhabitants. The exploration of the theme of lawlessness is fasciniating as Penn looks at it from the perspective of the law-breakers. Braxton - who is the arrogant, rich and law-abiding cattle rancher is portrayed in a negative light throughout.

Brando, similar to apocalypse now, potrays an eccentric and evil character, who although he may have is good points is ultimately a 'bad guy'.

My favourite aspect of the movie is the sharp dialogue between the horse-thieves and if you like westerns you will like this film a lot.

To conclude, a great film, with great dialogue, with great characters!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Unusual and Entertaining Western with Prominent Actors, 11 Mar 2008
This is an entertaining and unusual western-style film, with notable performances from Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando; who both play ultra-quirky characters which they would not normally be associated with.

It covers the local problem of horse rustling in a desolate community and the measures employed by the majority land owner to stop it.

It is a simply story, well told and includes aspects of friendship, romance and violent conflict - with a dash of rye humour thrown in !

There is a lot of unpleasant behaviour in the plot and a lot of killing; not all of it unjustified....

This DVD has good picture and sound quality, although I can only speak about the Region 1 edition (which I got because it is not cut).

" The Missouri Breaks" is a very insecure outing considering the male leads and the director. Jack Nicholson is watchable and assured but not outstanding. Read more
