Reviews

1.0 out of 5 stars A shocker 16 Dec 2007
Format:DVD
The film is very poor, easily the weakest in the series. It has a plot so thin it's translucent and rather than being seen as a film, it should be regarded as a rather meaningless sequence of quite ridiculous set-pieces and special effects. Dougray Scott proves here in this film once again that he quite simply cannot act, he merely leanrs words and delivers them and even Tom Cruise just doesn't seem interested. On the strength of this,if you're planning to make a ridiculous martial arts flick where story and performances just don't matter then John Woo is the director for you, otherwise please don't let this man near a film camera again!

The sequel to 1996's box office hit is a predictably enjoyable film.

The film's plot is, thankfully, much less complicated than the first film, which makes it easy to follow. The tone of the film is set stylishly with the much loved M:I genre, Tom Cruise being told he has a new mission while in the middle of a desert.

The plot has an original idea, but one that is drummed into viewers' heads constantly throughout the film, to the point of grating. It also drags on for far too long. Though the various plot twists just about cover it, the chase and fight between Hawke and Scott's character is hard to enjoy fully because it is too long, and we have already seen endless similar action. The sensual scenes between Scott and Newton are never really effective because they don't go anywhere.

The characters are interesting enough, but again, nothing extraordinary, and the use of masks becomes increasingly ludicrous as the agents begin donning masks that they could not possibly have had.

On the other hand, the movie's secret agent genre is deliciously enjoyable, and promotes a sort of futuristic James Bond feel to it.

The film itself is satisfactory, with many positive features, but it does have too much unneccessary padding and is often completely unrealistic. It may be good, but not half as good as the original.

Question: what criteria should be used for judging the worst film ever? Surely it must be the gap between what could have been made and what is actually produced. Tom Cruise starred, John Woo directed, and Robert Towne scripted this utter rot. There is only a token plot, the acting (especially Dougray Scott) is without charisma or talent and John Woo has his three main characters spinning from one pointless action set piece to another. It's even too dull to be one of those 'it's so bad it's entertaining' films (Amageddon, Con Air etc). Worst movie ever? It must be a contender. Avoid like the plague.

3.0 out of 5 stars More action but less plot.
Mission Impossible 2 is a vast improvement on the first film in terms of action scenes but really is disappointing in terms of the plot and the casting isn't much better.
