4.0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic, quirky art experience, 16 Sep 2000
By Andrea J. Weiss "aweiss" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Missing Voice (Case Study B) (Paperback)
This book and CD documents an audio walk by Canadian artist Janet Cardiff that begins at the Whitechapel Library in London. The work's been available for experiencing since June 1999; you request a Discman at the library's central desk and follow the artist's footsteps and conversation in a dreamlike, film-noirish journey through London in which you're not quite sure what's going on. The narrator/guide has found a photo of a red-haired woman and believes she's become caught up in some kind of murder mystery. Or is the red-haired woman actually the narrator herself? I listened to this tour in the comfort of my own home, but still found myself looking over my shoulder now and then. The book includes an article that describes Cardiff's previous work in the same vein as well as photographs of sites along the London tour and an afternote by Cardiff. If you're intrigued by hybrid works of art, if you like film, fiction, and have a sense for the absurd, give this intriguing artist an ear and an eye.
