Review

Most minds retreat from the scenes of our greatest fears: from the children’s ward, the hospital graveyard, the defeat of love. Siân Hughes, on the contrary, advances, with the flaring senses and clear eyes of a writer intent on her proper subject. These fine, bare, desolate poems are the result; each one as arresting, rare, and compelling as the truth. (Kate Clanchy )

Product Description

SHORTLISTED FOR THE FELIX DENNIS PRIZE FOR BEST FIRST COLLECTION FORWARD POETRY PRIZES 2009Poetry Bank Choice and Poetry Book Society Recommendation, shortlisted for the Aldeburgh First Collection Prize. These poems are clear, direct and emotional. They do not hide behind imagery, but head right for the heart of shame, laying bare the terrors of parenting, loss, regret, and falling in love with the wrong people.

This is an exquisite first collection which is both accessible and restrained. It centres round the loss of a child but there are also touches of humour. 'The Send Off', which speaks of the baby's funeral, is one of the best funeral poems I have ever read. Its title is a reference to Wilfred Owen's poem and it addresses the child as still alive, an expression of the mother's hopes. It's the concrete details that move, the idea of the name tags not being used because home clothes are not allowed, the child's room having no windows, the friends still to follow - other babies who will die. There's no self pity at all. Hard to write poems on this topic without being mawkish but Hughes pulls it off.

These are short, punchy, often funny, often poignant poems which are accessible to anyone, and especially to those who think they don't like poetry because it's too 'high brow' and difficult to read.
