Book Description

An Adams family novel.

From the Back Cover

The house in Caulfield Place, off Browning Street in Walworth, was haunted, or at least that's what the street kids said.So when two men, a woman, and a parrot moved in, everyone was very interested, especially fourteen-year-old Cassie Ford, who was particularly fascinated by the parrot.

And it was just about this time that Mr Finch, Chinese Lady's husband, and Boots's stepfather, began to get mysterious telephone calls.Mr Finch had never told the rest of the Adams family - except for Boots - the secrets of his past, or what kind of work he did for the government, and he decided not to tell them about the slightly sinister telephone calls either.

It was when he took Chinese Lady on a summer's day jaunt in his Morris motorcar that things began to happen. For, in the Hog's Back Hotel, Chinese Lady went to the cloakroom, and when she came back Mr Finch had vanished. It took all of Boots's ingenuity to finally discover what had happened, and Cassie's knowledge of the Caulfield Place parrot was to prove a vital clue in unravelling the mystery.

This book is a continuation of the lives of the lovely warm cockney Adams family. It starts in 1930 and involves Mr. Finch, Chinese Lady's 2nd husband. It is written with all the usual humour and although the story has a serious theme of espionage and intrigue, there is the usual happy ending that readers of the Adams family books have come to expect. I have enjoyed reading it as much as the previous ones and as always can't wait to finish it and move onto the rest of family saga.

I started reading the series involving the Adams family by accident and have been reading them ever since. If anyone enjoys novels which encompass the lives and times of both World Wars then I would suggest they give these books a try. This series is quite long, at least 29 books, so they include lots of generations of the family. I have not been disappointed with any of the books so far.

Another installment in the Adams family saga, with a big focus on Freddy Brown and Cassie Ford and their blossoming friendship. If you've enjoyed previous books in this series, you will undoubtedly enjoy this. I've always thought, it'd make a great tv series, especially this book, as elements of Mr Finch's past catch up with him.

This is a book which is one in the Adams family series, its full of intrigue and cloak and dagger stuff. Poor Polly!!! I do like her but in a way because I know what happens next I wish that Polly wasn't in it because she signals Emily's future demise

A very good story that fans of Mary Jane Staples expect. I can feel a range of emotions such as suspence have to keep reading to find out what happens.
Her books always make me laugh and cry and feelgood at the end.

Another story about the Adams Family that I missed at publication. It was a good story as each one of the series has been. Such a shame that the author has dies and there won't be any more.

Another great book in the Adams family saga. A get together with the family, a mystery to solve and lots of cockney laughs along the way. Looking forward to the next book
