Hummel has somewhat sank below the radar, surrounded as he was by such greats as Haydn and Beethoven. Nevertheless, his music has real power and is expertly crafted. The Te Deum is very exciting, followed by a lyrical and beautifully setting of the Mass. Perhaps this does not quite show the inspiration of the Haydn masses, or the Beethoven Mass in C, or perhaps I feel I have to say this out of loyalty to my favourite composers !
The performance is stunning. New Zealand is obviously not the cultural desert some people believe !
