This disc of the Josquin "Pange Lingua" mass and motets by German outfit Kammerchor Josquin des Préz kicks off with the six part motet "O virgo virginum" which I have only heard elsewhere on the Orlando Consort's stunning disc of Josquin motets; given that said motet on that recording would be one of my Desert Island tracks it was always going to be a hard act for anyone else to follow and it feels like a slightly disappointing opening to the disc here due to the unavoidable comparison. Following on we have the unusual ten part canon "Sit nomen Domini" which I have not heard elsewhere.

The mass itself is preceded by an excerpt (verses 1, 3 & 5) of Thomas Aquinas' plainchant hymn "Pangua Lingua" on which Josquin's mass was based. Here Josquin uses the plainchant theme equally with all four voices, unlike many other such masses where only a single part such as the tenor borrows the motif. This performance of the mass stands up well in comparison against, though not being quite as good as, those by Ensemble Clément Jannequin & Ensemble Organum and the Tallis Scholars. Slightly oddly the mass is immediately followed by a further short excerpt (verse 6) of Aquinas' hymn, but it does assist in giving the listener a further sense of how the mass lifts the theme, following directly on as it does from the Agnus Dei where it becomes most clear.
