5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely disc 11 May 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is a lovely disc. I say that even though I'm not sure it’s really to my taste or whether I'm in harmony with the music. And the historical cynic in me still has trouble accepting that a Spanish (colonial) church only just out of the Inquisition could have been so relaxed about musical form on a regular basis. Still, AL-King is the musicologist, not me, and I'm happy to trust him as a guide. Especially because, whatever my own musical tastes, I can tell that this is music played with panache and affection and given a great recording.

The music ranges from the devotional to the ecstatic and the exuberant. AL-King's singers are wonderful, particularly his three solo sopranos. The colours of guitars, conch shells, theorbos, lirones and bajons are extraordinary and add to the life and richness of the singer's performances.

The 24 bit recording does everyone justice. It's both clear and detailed but also soft and sumptuous, immediate and exciting but also rounded and airy. One of the best non-DSD SACDs I've heard (other than Chandos). The surround channels don't "do" a lot but they do their usual job of helping lift the sound very well.

Strongly recommended, whatever your musical tastes.
