ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!! BUY IT!!!, 4 Jul 2003
I would give this album ten stars if I could. 'Miss Saigon' is possibly the best musical written of the last twenty years, it's a beautiful love story between a Vietnamese bargirl named Kim who is forced into prostitution and an American Marine named Chris during the last few weeks of the Vietnam War. Joanna Ampil, a former unknown, sings the role of Kim with a fierce passion and underlying tenderness, she is just brilliant. Wait till you hear her sing 'I Still Believe' and "I'd Give My Life for You', I promise you will want to play them over and over again!!Peter Cousens sings Chris very well but I think he is somewhat undershadowed by Joanna Ampil, whose voice blew me away. Hinton Battle is on fine form as Chris' best friend John, and arguably his finest moment is the fabulous stirring anthem 'Bui-Doi', backed by a male gospel choir. Ruthie Henshall is also brilliant (as she usually is) as Chris' wife Ellen. She portrays a woman trying to come to terms with her husband's past really well and you will also be blown away by her singing, especially on 'I Still Believe' and the moving "Now That I've Seen Her." Kevin Gray sleazes up his role of the Engineer to perfection. Listen to 'The American Dream' to hear what I mean. I can't express how much I love this show. It definitely rivals 'Les Miserables' as my favourite musical ever! Anyone who has seen it has to agree with me how mind-blowingly great it is. So, BUY THIS CD!!!! IT'S ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!! The highlights are the showstopping opener 'Heat is on in Saigon,' the deeply moving duet 'Movie in my Mind' (by far my favourite), sung by the fabulous Gigi and Kim, the romantic 'Sun and Moon,' the gorgeous and surreal 'Dju Vui Vai' in 'The Wedding Ceremony', which is sung by all the girls, the rousing march 'Morning of the Dragon', sung by the whole company, the heartfelt duet between Kim and Ellen 'I Still Believe', the deeply stirring anthem 'Bui-Doi' about half-bred children in Vietnam, 'Kim's Nightmare', a very sad flashback when we discover how Kim and Chris were separated, and the 'Finale', when Kim sacrifices herself for her child. I swear you will have tears in your eyes when the final song is ended. So, my last word is BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT!!!!!
