3.0 out of 5 stars No match to Swanson, 4 Oct 2003

Somerset Maugham's short story was turned into a film before, by Lewis Milestone in 1932 (as 'Rain' with Joan Crawford, a much too chatty and literal early talkie), and by Raoul Walsh in 1928 with sultry Gloria Swanson in a definitive performance. Curtis Bernhardt in 1953 did not exactly try reaching for the moon, and his movie is sort of fine, but nowhere near the Walsh masterpiece which is also out on a brilliantly transferred DVD. La Hayworth is slightly round about the hips in this comeback part, but she ooooooooozes sexuality as the ex-prostitute who just cannot help beguiling all the GI's. José Ferrer is the slimy preacherman, but he isn't halfway dangerous enough. Colours are nicely reproduced.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rita Hayworth in the tropics!, 5 Mar 2010

Full screen copy, which is slightly pan & scanned or maybe an open matt print as the orginal ratio is 1:75.1, so full frame is not too bad. looks like it was taken from different source material as some shots show grain & look washed out colour.

Movie is not too bad I got this as I like Bronson & he is in it on & off through out, although it's Hayworth, Ferrer & Aldo Ray who are the main stars.

Some nice songs from Hayworth & a basic story of redemption.

Not a bad movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sadie Thompson, 12 April 2009

I bought this film because I had obtained 'You were never lovelier' and 'You'll never get rich', and was interested to see if it would be a good. Rita Hayworth certainly looks as good, but the Somerset Maugham plot doesn't really treat her very well. AQ good film, not a great film.
