In her portrayal of small town society the writer often shows a degree of comic insight and a sureness of touch which would not be out of place in a Jane Austen novel. High praise indeed.
Miss Julia is a superb creation: honest, kind, without any but the most minor and excusable self delusion. Her pithy observations on the pretensions of others are a delight and her short way with hypocrisy has a surgical edge. Listening to Miss Julia's inner voice,I was frequently reminded of another unforgettable character, Huckleberry Finn, though I suspect that she would not be impressed by the comparison.
This book gave me enormous pleasure and I recommend it unreservedly.
An angry Julia soon learns that the entire town knew about Senior's affair. She takes her late husband's child into her home, but goes one step beyond by acknowledging Junior as a family member. Meanwhile, the pastor tries to prove that Julia is incompetent to run the estate. He wants the court to name him to manage it. A relative of Hazel sees the kid as a ticket to gaining Julia's money even if it means kidnapping the child. Julia understands that she, with the help of her maid and Hazel, has a fight on her hands to keep what is rightfully belongs to her and Junior.
MISS JULIA SPEAKS HER MIND is an interesting comedic look at the lifestyle of a small Southern town. The characters are interesting, particularly Julia who reexamines her life. The support cast adds to the entertainment as they show how people interact with one another. Since Miss Daisy and Steel Magnolias, many authors have written similar story lines. Ann B. Ross provides a fresh look as she treats difficult social issues in a humorous folksy way.
Harriet Klausner
For a fast-paced, hilarious and thoroughly fun summer read, this is the book to pick.
