I have always liked Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and the Philly sound but I had never invested in their albums. That was a mistake. This is now probably my favourite Philly Soul album of all time. This is a real low-light classic with horn, string and vocal arrangements that perfectly match the brooding Gamble and Huff songs. Yesterday I Had The Blues and Be For Real must have had Isaac Hayes worried at the time of it's release in 1972!
The remastering and packaging is wonderful also. I cannot recommend this reissue enough. If you don't know it by now...

I've purchased 6 BBR CD reissues to date - and each has been a revelation - sound quality, presentation and bonuses - all top class (I've reviewed them too). Released October 2010 in the UK - this expanded CD reissue of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes 1972 classic debut album on Philly is no exception. It's properly fabulous Seventies Soul.
Here are the details for Big Break Records CDBBR0018 (51:49 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 7 are the album "I Miss You" released September 1972 in the USA on Philadelphia International KZ 31648 and February 1973 in the UK on CBS Records S 65350. The UK title is "Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes" and was reissued in 1974 on Philadelphia International S PIR 65934
Tracks 8, 9 and 10 are EDITED SINGLE VERSIONS of "I Miss You (Part 1)", "Yesterday I Had The Blues" and "Be For Real"
Track 11 is "If You Don't Know Me By Now (Live In San Francisco, 1973)" - this version (featuring Teddy Pendergrass) first appeared on the 2004 Legacy reissue of the album as a previously unreleased bonus track
At the time of release the album produced 3 singles in the USA and 2 in the UK with an album track edit of "Be For Real" later used as a B-side in 1975. There were also reissues of the two big hits "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "I Miss You (Part 1)" in 1974 and 1975 on both sides of the pond. This reissue will allow fans to sequence on CD all of these 7" single tracks for the first time:

the debut album on tsop, this went on to become a classic yardstick for the philly sound . IF YOU DONT KNOW ME BY NOW....sung by a certain mr TEDDY PENDERGRASS...would epitomise the sound of philadelphia...I MISS YOU...dripped gut wrenching soul, and showcasedthe harmony of a wonderful vocal group...althoughshort and sweet the album contained enough solid ballads to announce to the record buying public...wow this the way forward for soul music.. gamble& huff, had created a soul monster, with harold melvin, the 4 albums on philly all strong and soulful!!!! any philly fan will snap this up . its a wonderful piece of nostalgia,brought to you in digital cracklefree cd. not a lot more to add, except go buy this classic collection of soul music......the sound of philadelphia....you cant beat it.
