My 4 year old loves the story of Miss Dirt and her hectic and variable life style. This book is not only a fun read but looks at family life from a different perspective to most children's stories, teaching children that one form of parenting is no better or worse than another form. With many split families in today's society it is refreshing and realistic to have a story about a girl who shares her time between her Mum and her Dad and has a life style that is both poor and rich. A must for any child's bookshelf.

Timeless literature for young children of primary age. They are particularly useful for children who speak English as a second language

Very disappointing purchase. I had several of the Happy Families series when I was a child in the early 80s - I bought this thinking it would be along the same lines. My 20m old son loves being read the classics like Miss Wobble the Waitress or Mr. Biff the Boxer, so I thought I'd add to his collection. This book, along with at least two others I mistakenly purchased (Vole the Vet and Cliff the Climber) are about divorce/single parents etc. Is this to make kids from messed up families feel better?!It's as though the publisher said there were too many 'happy families' in the series; we need some dysfunctional ones to be up-to-date. This book is didactic, PC, and depressing - it's also got a patronising air about it. It's about divorce; the child being shared between two parents. Completely out of the character of the series and for the wrong age group in any event. I note this one was published in 1996, considerably later than the better ones. It's such a shame; this book does not have the jolly, childish and somewhat ridiculous story one would expect from this series. Be warned.
