Nightmare at the finish

I purchased this book because I was a beginner making the transition to intermediate. The directions were easy, knit, purl, some shaping. However when completely finished knitting, there were no directions on how to put together or finish. Directions said to cast on and off for the collar, but no one can tell me how to sew collar on without seam showing and looking unprofessional. All the other books I have say to pick up stitches and knit collar right to sweater. I am in at a loss to finish sweater after spending alot of time and money on it. Also, I emailed the author at Rowan, but she has not replied to me. It's a nightmare.
