Product Description

Product Description

A thief offers a woman a chance at a new life by cutting her bonds, beginning a journey that will take both of them downriver and out to the coast of West Africa. The time is 12,000 BC, and war is breaking out between the villages on the coast. Frantic to escape, the two travelers join others fleeing the chaos of battle. They think they'll be safe if they head down the coast by boat, but the sea sweeps them out into a new, very different world and a destiny they couldn't have imagined.

About the Author

After receiving her Masters degree in English, Rollins taught composition and literature, including World Literature and Latin American Literature, and became fascinated by the extraordinary wealth of ancient Mesoamerican culture, which is often overlooked in history books. This research, as well as travel to ancient sites in Africa, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras, provided the inspiration for this book. It deals with early explorers in the Western Hemisphere - amazing people who dared to leave everything they knew behind and create a new life in a new world.

A fascinating look at prehistoric humanity and what may have been 12 Jan 2011
By Auntsophie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Other than what we can interpret from cave drawings made thousands of years ago, we know almost nothing about our very early ancestors. What were their lives like? How - and why - did they come to populate other parts of the world? This new novel by Kathleen Flanagan Rollins presents a compelling and captivating argument that, in spite of huge environmental and technological differences, people of 12,000 years ago were probably very much like us. They longed for the same things craved by "modern" folk: peace, security, companionship, and love. For anyone who loves historical novels and is curious about the pre-history we don't know, I highly recommend Misfits and Heroes: West from Africa. You won't be able to put it down!

a novel you can get lost in 18 Feb 2011
By Carol Ryan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I started this book thinking, 'this isn't my genre and it looks long', but I was soon hooked. Rollins is an authoritive storyteller. She knows the flora and fauna of the region she writes about( West Africa circa 12000 B.C.)--you feel like you can trust in her created world. And the story urges you on, like the characters swept along the river. The environment the characters inhabit is fully fleshed out--tools are made, cloth is woven, songs are sung. It is a delightful imaginative book by a wonderful writer.

An Excellent Historical Novel by an Exciting New Writer 26 Sep 2011
By Smaldey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Fans of Ken Follett, Antonia Fraser, and James Michener will enjoy this excellent historical novel. Kathleen Rollins combines adventure, fascinating character development, and intriguing plot twists with much research on archaeological findings for the prehistoric era that is c. l2,000 B.C. Her knowledge of ancient artifacts and cave drawings, along with her keen understanding of human quirks and foibles, result in a book that, once begun, is hard to put down. Naaba and Asha are as real as Antony and Cleopatra, Heloise and Abelard, or Rhett and Scarlett, and they face the same hazards of living a life in a dangerous time filled with battles, political ambitions, and scheming intrigues. Heroes, villains, and ordinary folk populate their world. Their efforts to escape to a better life in a safer environment conclude the first volume. Other readers will undoubtedly share my anticipation for books two and three of the proposed trilogy.
