Written in 1897 this is the best novel I could find in print, in english translation, by one of Spain's most important 19th century writers. It gives a detailed, authentic, contemporaneous account of the worst extremes of poverty in late 19th century Madrid, with an entertaining and moving story about a good hearted maid who secretly begs to keep her mistress and her family from starving.
