Undoubtedly like many other people my first experience of this piece was on hearing it recently on a special Easter episode of the BBC's Sacred Music. Ironically it had been appearing at the top of my Amazon music recommendations for quite some time, but I had never taken any notice of it as most of the sacred music to which I listen is from earlier times. I'm glad therefore that I happened upon Simon Russell Beale's programme - I have certainly been missing out on a sublime composition.

The recording here is certainly every bit as good as the one seen in the above episode, though given that the original release date here is listed as 1990 it is obviously not Elin Manahan Thomas performing the soaring vocals. Fabulous though this is, I wouldn't rank it as the best I have heard. That honour goes to two separate performances by French ensemble A Sei Voci. Their (relatively speaking) "plain" version, although more drawn out than this pacier Sixteen performance, actually possesses more brio in my estimation; and as for the "ornamented" version with the soprano's vocal gymnastics (attempting to recreate the original "secret" ornamentation?), well that's something else entirely and will truly blow you away. Nevertheless I'm glad to also own Harry C's interpretation.

First came across this piece sampled on an Orb track. Years later I now own the original piece and am in awe of its beauty and power. Brought tears to my eyes on first listening. 11 minutes of sublime heaven!
