Product Description

CD Description

MISE AGUS ISE (Myseld and Herself in Gaelic) combines the talents of two unique performers. Alison's celestial tones first came to public attention on Mellow Candle's seminal 1972 Acid Folk classic 'Swaddling Songs'. Now back home in Dublin, she writes with clarity of experience, recalling her early days and adventures abroad. Isabel comes from Donegal, a place rich in music and history. She can pen a jig or an air or dress an arrangement as easily as she smiles, which she does a lot. Isabel plays accordion, piano, keyboards, guitar and whistles, adding a sturdy backbone to Alison's songs. Additionally, for the first time since 1973, Alison is reunited with two fellow members of Mellow Candle, Dave Williams and Frank Boylan. Three decades later their musical alchemy adds an extra lustre to the flame of this recording of modern Irish, cosmopolitan Celtic Folk Rock music. Tracks: The Blackcap / A Skip And I Do / By The Weir, Nutwood, McKelvery's / Hangover From Hell / Turn The Corner / Armistice Day / A Wee Tune For Peter / Mother Of Pearl (And Invention) / In The Web / Heavil / Brave Face / Seals In The Sound.

Alison O'Donnell (under her married surname Williams - her husband was the guitarist David Williams) was the force (with Clodagh Simonds) that powered Mellow Candle into infamy with their 1972 album 'Swaddling Songs' on Deram (since reissued many times both legally and not, but finally the subject of its best, and totally legit, reissue on Esoteric Records this month - March 2008). She absolutely shines on this very fine album which as a solo work rides a similar path to that which Sandy Denny's solo career took following her stellar work with Fairport Convention. Outstanding, and 35 years on, none of the magic has gone. Phenomenal - not one to miss!. Irish contemporary folk rock at its very best!

I make no claim to be an expert on this or any other type of music, but, as an ordinary Joe in the street, I found this album quite magical and would recommend it to anyone. Every track is first rate, but, for me, the most evocative of all are The Blackcap, Mother of Pearl and Seals in the Sound.
