10 of 10 people found the following review helpful By keith jones on 12 Aug. 2002
Format: Audio CD
The second track here opens with the sound of a police siren howling (speeding to a grotty crime scene through a rain soaked night.... In my mind anyway). The recording is dirty sounding and cracked. I think this thing was put together on the cheap but the effect it creates is pretty good. You can close your eyes and imagine the band playing out these songs in some kind of seedy, small, badly lit dive bar; someplace where everybody doesn't know your name, because nobody cares.
The music is tooth-rattling, jagged, edgy and frequently unnerving. The band here is a slightly different one to the band that made the more recently released Out of the Races... EP. Keyboards and piano are featured here, along with Luke Jenner's weirdo howl and Vito Roccoforte's runaway punk train drumming. Olio is a haunting keyboard and guitar driven lonely song. AlieNation sees the band playing at being the Specials and Joy Division at the same time.
The mood of this mini album is dark and downbeat, some of the songs could be labelled "difficult", yet you could still dance to them. You'd just have to close your eyes and imagine yourself in that badly lit dive bar with the rain and sirens outside...
