Product Description

Product Description

Belle, restless and sleepless, is alone in her vast new house while her husband works abroad. Dangerously idle, she invites the alluring and damaged Tina, a local waitress with a violent boyfriend, to become her lodger – even though she barely knows her.

Gradually Belle and Tina grow closer, sharing clothes, secrets, stories of their troubled pasts, and even their fantasies. But as Belle finds herself getting increasingly enmeshed with the younger woman, her presence becomes more and more unsettling. Soon Belle is drawn into a dark, erotically charged world of risk and transgression that she can’t – and doesn’t want to – control. What price will she pay for letting a stranger into her life?

From the Inside Flap

Then three loud knocks, rattling the entire house. A woman's
cough. I am rooted to the upstairs landing; sensing, knowing it is her.
Above me, a light bulb hums; the house cocks its hostile ear.

To describe this perverse little work as romantic might seem itself perverse, but that, at heart, is what it is. Every one of these damaged characters has his or her agenda, but beyond this you sense a desperate search for connection. Sad and sexy are odd bedfellows, but that's what Maria Alvarez offers us, and the result is unexpectedly touching.

This is one of the best books I've read this year. Creepy and compelling and spooky as a David Lynch film. (My hero). Really recommend it.
