Book Description

15 Aug 2008 Taschen 25th Anniversary
Fellow painter Walter Erben spent countless hours conversing with his colleague Joan Miro (1893-1983) at his house in Mallorca in preparation for this book. Over the course of these talks, Miro gave Erben many interesting and invaluable insights into his art, as well as his own interpretations of his most significant works. Thus was born this Miro retrospective which explores, through texts and images, the life's work of one of the 20th century's most influential painters.

5.0 out of 5 stars LAY BARE THE SOUL 27 April 2009
Format:Paperback
The heart of this readable biographical art work revolves around a revealing interview in the mid-nineteen fifties with this illustrious artist,at his Mallorca home.Interveaved with numerous examples of Miro's work with a helpful commentary alongside. The second half of the book provides an in-depth critique of Miro and concludes with a short, but learned essay by Hugo Duchting on the artist's later works.Without doubt this book 'lays bare the soul 'of Catalan's most famous son.Excellent value and in keeping with Taschen's high artistic standards in this field.

As with most Taschen publications, a very well presented book including Miro's famous paintings and many more of his two-dimensional works. The book is accompanied by Walter Erben's interview with Miro at his 'Sert Studio' in Mallorca. It is well written and Erben displays a strong knowledge of Miro the artist and the man. What stops this book getting five stars is the lack of Miro's sculptures. The book is dominated by paintings but by 1950 Miro had expanded into three-dimensional different media such as sculpture and tapestry as well as murals. Furthermore, although Erben's account is an interesting read, many of Miro's surrealist paintings are left unexplained and not at least critically studied by the author to decipher some meaning. A missed opportunity for a bewildering yet exciting artist.

Good value product and efficient service. There was one page missing which contained an important picture of a Miro painting, this was disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Miro 13 Jan 2012
By Julia
Format:Hardcover
This is a lovely book but for some reason which is lost on me it does not have an index. In order to find out whether a specific painting is included I have to trawl through the whole book, which is frustrating and time consuming.
