Product Description

Product Description

It is the summer of 1945, and Miriam and her extended family are weary but disciplined by war, and accustomed to austerity. Throughout this period, she deals with more deaths, ill health, moving house, rationing and accidents; all the while guiding her loved ones through the deprivation and destitution that is the East-End of London. Yet, there are births, a new relationship for her and marriages. Conscription and the introduction of the National Health arrive at the end in 1948. As with, Miriam's War, and, A Year in Holloway, she copes daily, struggling with a situation that is unique and difficult. Her pathos, determination, humour and love are all she has.

More About the Author

Find me on Facebook at

I was born a native of Stratford in the East End of London in September 1952 and raised in nearby Leyton, developing a lifelong interest in literature. I joined my local library when I was three. Unfortunately, I had an awful education due to dyslexia. I was caned often because I could not learn. Therefore, I am entirely self-taught. Many of my thirty novels have been proofread (and then republished) by me several times. Nevertheless, on occasions, I still find mistakes, and I apologise in advance.
My favourite book is a dictionary and I often find joy with the correct placement of a single word. I am noted for including 'cookies' or 'Easter eggs' in much of my work and I delight in incorporating coincidences and parallels from our real world.
A polymath, shy, slightly synaesthete with a predilection for the supernatural since childhood and transgendered, after working at hundreds of jobs for twenty-five years, in 1994, after the death of my parents, I decided to change my life around and write as a transgendered woman. Although having assisted in various TV and film projects, I enjoy privacy and I am known for my hermit-like existence, being fully cognizance of how people react to my preferred gender. However, I am known for my positive outlook and broad sense of humour.
I feel comfortable working simply. During the embryonic stages of a piece, I prefer to have very little between myself and content. Although my pieces are written up and further constructed on a word processor, the initial, 'layering of the landscape' is achieved with nothing more than a sharp HB pencil, a wad of new paper and a clean white eraser. This method of creation, I accept as pure, free from electronic distraction and infinitely and immediately alterable. Pareidolia often plays a part in my creative process.
I am an officially one of Amazon's best sellers. I've been judged that I am the 94th 'most read' on Amazon. And I've recently been told that my portrait, as a transgendered writer, is now hanging in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and is now a part of the museum's permanent collection.
A lifelong migraine and panic sufferer, my work reflects the subterranean, saturnian, plutonic, spiritual, solar and luna aspects of human existence as I continuously attempt to understand our world. A lifelong fascination with time, abandonment, love and death are four qualities which motivate me.

This is a good tale which would benefit greatly by being proof read and corrected, I found it hard going.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment 6 Jun. 2014

I cannot rate this book due to the inappropriate grammar, where should have is written in today's slang as, should Of , or could HAVE written as could OF. I cringed every time it came up, after all, I was reading a story from 1945 , couldn't read past the visit to Devon, with remains of the bombings and another OF replacing HAVE.

1.0 out of 5 stars Miriam`s Family Life 2 Jan. 2013

I was really looking forward to reading this book as I love this era, I am really interested in social history. I found the book so difficult to read due to the spelling mistakes and obvious lack of editing, it was like it was the first draft of the book. I found some of the descriptions very flat so it was difficult to imagine what the author was talking about. I am sorry to say I gave up on the book in the end due to the lack of editing, I just found it too annoying and frustrating.
