This DVD set provides sensible, straightforward information without any silly gimmicks. Miriam Stoppard has a reassuring and didactic manner without being patronising. In some parts, she talks straight to camera or to a doctor; in others, she talks to parents about their experiences. Sometimes, the parents talk straight to the camera.
The first disk (1 hr 33 mins) is chiefly a pregnancy timeline, explaining how the woman will feel and how the baby is developing at different stages. You can move between these stages on the disk quite easily; each section is about 3-6 minutes or so long. Besides the timeline, there are sections about various topics: I found the ones on antenatal classes, birth plans, the birthing team and labour & birth particularly helpful. There is a short section about exercise but no details of specific exercises for pregnancy, such as particular stretches etc.
The second disk (39 mins) is about what happens after birth and about fathers' experiences. A group of fathers gathers in a room to discuss their thoughts in an informal yet serious way, and I found this interesting. Among other things, there is a short section about feeding the baby but it does not go into great detail. It could do with information about nappies, as the range is confusing these days.
In all, this packs a lot into a small set.
My first disk was a bit sticky: To get past the Subtitles page, I have to press the down arrow and OK button in quick succession. Then it stuck after the introduction: The only way to get past this is to fast forward through the intro, but it DOES work.
Incidentally, there are also Hindi subtitles.
