This is my favourite Meat Puppets album now with extra tracks thanks to Rykodisc releasing their back catalogue. By the time the 'Puppets had reached this stage the speed of earlier recordings had been replaced with a much more mature approach. The playing is more relaxed and the sound is hard to pinpoint as they were a very creative band who never really gained any great commercial success. The other review here has them down as a cross between ZZ Top and the Grateful Dead but when these recording were made they were part of the SST stable (Black Flag/Screaming Trees/Husker Du) and to me were out on their own, a sort of Camper Van Beethoven on acid. Like Husker Du they moved away from hardcore and forged their own psychedelic pop sound. 'The Wind and the Rain' was once played on Radio One one afternoon but that was as good as it got. If you only own one Meat Puppets release make sure this is the one - you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars The psychadelic 'epic' 24 April 2004
Format:Audio CD
Well, you may have heard this a million times, but hey, this is thepsychadelic 'epic' of the pups'. After a half dozen U-turns of previousalbums, the spagetti junction arrived. Mirage. It just redefines youropinion on alternate 80's music.
Some of the songs, notably the title track and 'The Mighty' are justamazing. Unfortunetly, a couple of the songs are 'fillers', notably Track6, 'Get on Down' (funny video thou) and 11, 'Love Our Children forever'.However, when an average track is like 'Leaves' or 'A hundred miles', youend up with one swell album.
After a disappointing first two albums (the second of which is now one oftheir most popular, proabably due to Cobain using 3 songs from it onunplugged), a highly unrated 3rd and a seemingly invisible fourth, Miragehad to be good. Although, again, it could have sold better, now everyoneknew a band called 'The Meat Puppets' werent just a bunch of acid-trippin'desert-screwing, rock-throwing hippies. They were musicians and damn goodones at that.
Always a nice chill album. Wherever you are, this album will calm youdown.
A Pups Fan

5.0 out of 5 stars 10/10 14 Aug 2014

This is one of the best albums I have ever heard, from the world's most underated band. Every song is soulful and unique, not one boring guitar riff or lyric. I have to be opinionated here but anyone with at least a decent taste in music will love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Meat Puppets psycadellic masterpiece 24 May 2005
By Stephen B. Sumemrlin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Mirage is exactly what you have heard it was, The meat puppets psycadellic masterpiece. I don't know how any meat puppets fan could dislike this album it's probobly my third favorite album of theres. Every song is so colorful and the album as a whole paints the picture of the album cover when you hear it. The opening of the album starts off with curts psycadellic guitar which is the intro to the laid back title track. Quit it is an all out Meat Puppets rocker which you can't help but really get into. Get on down is a funny song where the music just makes you want to do a stupid little dance as well as sing along too. The lyrics have to do with taking your car apart and what not. A Hundred Miles is probobly my favorite track where the music in the verses have a get up and grove beat and the chorus is the part of the song that rocks! If you liked Up on the Sun, Meat Puppets II, and Too High to Die then you will most likely love this and your collection should not be without this. If you want to start with this album then go ahead and click buy cd and wait for the glorious day when one of rock's greatest masterpieces comes on your doorstep.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Pups release 26 Dec 1999
By Chas Millar - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is my favorite disc by a band with a fantastic musical dynamic that draws on such a wide influence of styles. This disc has a pretty strong country flavor, the playing is swell, most of the songs are good ones. I really like this period of their work, but my main attraction to this band is that each album is unique in style, yet so absolutely Meat Puppets! Curt Kirkwood's guitar work is bitchen, as always!

5.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked masterpiece 28 July 2007
By Likebeingalive - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I really cannot say enough good things about this album. I could go on and on, but I will be brief. While Up on the Sun and Meat Puppets II typically receive all of the critical accolades (and rightfully so), it is 1987's Mirage that is the hidden gem in the Meat Puppets discography. It manages to combine high-brow intellectualism with off-the-wall silliness. The song The Mighty Zero is a perfect example of this. The music is clever and the words even more so. Lyrical content is devoted to such things as nature, time, and math. Other standouts include Leaves, Confusion Fog, and I am a Machine. It is obvious that the Puppets spent a lot of time creating Mirage (three months, as opposed to four days for 1988's Huevos). This is a whacked-out piece of work that could have only been produced by the collective genius of the Meat Puppets. Listen to it while you think and laugh at the same time.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Second Favorite Pups recording 16 April 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
While "Up On The Sun" is my all-time favorite Pups album, this comes real close. "Liquified" is probably my favorite MP song just because of the wacked-out lyrics. "Mirage" conjurs up psychedelic images of the 'Zona desert, and "The Mighty Zero" taught me all about multiplication and getting rid of intractable problems.
