5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, funny & sweet, 24 May 2003
By A Customer
This is a lovely, feel-good novel - it's the story of forgiveness, love and miracles in the tiny Tuscan village of Santa Fico, populated with eccentric, quirky and memorable characters.
18 years later after leaving Santa Fico Leo Pizzola finally returns - but he is not warmly welcomed by his one true love, Marta. He last saw her on the eve of her wedding to his best friend Franco.
When a bus load of lost English tourists find themselves in Santa Fico, Leo and childhood friend Topo fall back on old habits of telling tall tales to the unsuspecting tourists, embellishing the history of Santa Fico with the miracle of St Francis and the fig tree.

Then a minor earthquake hits Italy, causing extensive damage to the cathedral and lending opportunity for a magnificent fresco to be stolen. Father Elio blames himself, believing that this has happened because of his great, un-confessed sin, the burden of which he has been carrying for 50 years. He decides to fast until he receives a sign that God has forgiven him.
It's then up to Leo, Topo and Marta to find a real miracle, to save Father Elio's life...

The story is utterly charming, touching and impossible not to enjoy.
I wholeheartedly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and very entertaining, 12 Oct 2004
By A Customer
I only bought a copy of this book as I was having trouble trying to find a 3rd book in a 3 for 2 offer in a bookshop - but I'm very glad that I picked this book up to give it a go.

Set during a sweltering summer in Tuscany, the book tells the story of a group of friends and how the past collides with the present when one of the group returns to Italy after living in self-imposed exhile in America for 16 years. The story certainly isn't what you expect it to be when you start reading and has some pleasant surprises in store. The characters are well developed and enjoyable - especially the anti-hero 'Leo'. However, it is the descriptions of the village of Santo Fico and the sun-drenched Tuscan countryside that impresses the most. The book is light hearted and races along with a sense of fun - despite being full of serious themes and events.

This is a great page-turner, very well written and a highly enjoyable read. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is truly a book of miracles, 27 Oct 2006

This is simply one of the best novels I have ever read. A great reading experience. Not many novels has the ability to give the reader such a warm feeling of innocence and joy. The story is humourous and intelligent and tells the story of friendship, love, adveture, betrayal and not least miracles whose outcome not always ends up as expected. Read it and enjoy!
