Product Description

This volume tells the story of life in war-torn Bosnia and of a young couple's heroic efforts to rebuild the shattered community of Mostar. In January 1993, a Croat Christian working for a small aid agency drove a lorry-load of stoves into Mostar, the principal city of Herzogovina and the scene of fierce fighting between Croats, Muslims and Serbs. Once a symbol of peaceful co-existence, Mostar had become a hell of ethnic conflict. The lorry driver, Nikola Skrinjaric, and his fiancee Sandra decided to do what they could to alleviate the suffering of those who had not fled. Two months later, they were married in Mostar and were leading a church, offering support and consolation to those whose lists of bereavements grew by the week. The church has grown despite the hatred, and members of all three ethnic groups are united in a community which is already building bridges of reconciliation and forgiveness. The story of Nikola and Sandra is the focus for this account of the lives of individuals who lived through the hell of Mostar in 1993, each being profoundly affected and changed by their experience. Above all, the book is a story of a city and its people experiencing great suffering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miracle in Mostar, 21 May 2011
This review is from: Miracle in Mostar (Paperback)
This book was written in 1995 during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia. It outlines some of the people involved in courageous humanitarian exploits in very dangerous situations. In 1993 a young couple from the current Bosnia and Croatia ended up in Mostar - the scene of horrendous fighting and the destruction of the famous 500 year old bridge - Stari Most. There they distributed aid, and with others set up a refuge which developed into an evagelical church reaching out to all ethnic groups in the city. As part of their work, Nikola and Sandra also noticed the situation of the young people in the city. Schools were closed and many friends had been sent to their ethic regions. They were able to get passes to get out of Mostar and to a place where a coach load of young people were able to have a brief holiday away from the main fighting, in a building which was also an orphanage set up during the war.

This holiday was repeated and the final outcome of this was the a youth centre was set up in Mostar, welcoming all faiths or none from the different and traumatised ethinic groups. Here the book ends. However...

This youth centre is still operating today, albeit in a different location - actually overlooking the rebuilt bridge! There are 2 further centres now - in Capljina and Jajce. I was reading the book (which was difficult to source) as I have supported this charity for many years and wanted to read about its history.

I found the book moving and challenging. People had a vision of what could happen in a dire situation. Not only was it set up, but it is still thriving today reaching a new generation of young people who are still affected by the consequences of the war. Under the title New Bridge - Novi Most International is a Christian charitable organisation with a vision to equip young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina to enter their futures with hope and confidence and empower them to become instruments of transformation in their communities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blessed to have been there., 21 Jan 2011

This review is from: Miracle in Mostar (Paperback)
Having been to Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina and knowing the streets and locations written about in this book I found it an excetionally wonderful read! It was great to read about the way God works and provides hope even in the midst of a devastating war. Much of Bosnia & Herzegovina is still dreadfully broken and dark even nearly 20 years after the war has "ended" but there are many sources of light and hope springing up all over the country.

I really wish there would be another printing of this book so more people could read this wonderful story. I recommend this book to everyone with a heart for missions especially those planning to serve in any of the former Yugoslavian Countries.
