Product Description

A Minotaur at the Savoy comprises more than fifty whimsical fantasy and SF vignettes, from the mysterious giant hand found in a wood in Yorkshire to the best way to deal with a dragon that's taken a shine to the gold reserves of Fort Knox. It is a little known fact of history - or myth, or both, that around the start of the twentieth century there existed a lost year. In this year, a green comet appeared in the sky. As it grew larger, things that would previously have been considered utterly fantastical began to seep into everyday life. By the height of summer, imagination and reality were so seamlessly merged that few recalled a time when the world had been otherwise. Mermaids swam in the Mediterranean. Martians commuted by train from Woking. Greek gods gave lecture tours of the United States. And with this new way of life came a whole set of problems of etiquette and decorum (see reference to mermaids). Fortunately, the solution was at hand. In the depths of the British Museum, intrepid academics Bampton "Bammy" Bromfield and Cyril Clattercut had long been cataloguing accounts of the uncanny from around the world on behalf of the Royal Mythological Society. The arrival of the green comet was about to give them the busiest year of their lives... This selection of Dunsany-esque fantasy vignettes ties in with the Mirabilis - Year of Wonders graphic novel, available in print and on iPad.

High style 28 Jan 2012
By JAW
Format:Paperback
In format, this slim volume takes the form of an episodic 'problem page' wherein bewildered Victorians correspond with two experts in an attempt to make some sense of a world gone wild. Specifically, a world where reality, imagination and mythology have suddenly and seamlessly melded. Where, for example, a Minotaur may turn up as a - not entirely helpful or safe - doorman at the Savoy hotel. It must be said that the advice provided is not consistently inspired by Christian charity or supplying practical remedies...
Much weirdness ensues, some of it humorous, some perilous or even poignant or tragic, but all written with huge style and sure mastery of the transmogrified world depicted.
Highly recommended.

This is a collection of wryly whimsical and wonderfully amusing little tales from the world of Mirabilis, a cool graphic novel by Dave and Leo. It's based around the Royal Mythological Society, run by a couple of academics and is a collection of letters sent from people around the world to the RMS, about weird goings on and strange, faery tale like events, with lots of hilarity along with it. It's basically like dipping into the weird mind of Morris. Which is, surprisingly, great fun! I have it by my bedside - can't wait for the next lot to come out.

The, ahem, luminaries of the Royal Mythological Society work their way through a year's fraught correspondence, advising on how to deal with the Annus Mirabilis' bestiary of legends come to life. Eruditely droll and breezy, the proceedings contain no artwork save the cover, but rather an atmospherically nuts-&-bolts Q&A - top-hats off to its collators.
