Product Description

Tom Hardy stars as Theo in the epic fantasy Minotaur .

In an Iron Age village a terrible sacrifice occurs every year.

For generations the village youths are stolen from their families and sacrificed to a mythical beast - the Minotaur. Theo (Tom Hardy - Bronson, Inception, Dark Knight Rises), haunted by the loss of his love in an earlier sacrifice seeks revenge!. His father Cyrnan (Rutguer Hauer - Blade Runner, Sin City, Hobo with a shotgun), the village leader, tries to reason with Theo not to go but Theo is driven by blind rage.

A great Evil threatens the land now threatens the whole land. Mad with power, the King (Tony Todd - Candyman Platoon, Man from Earth) presides over the sacrifice of innocents to the Minotaur, an evil beast of unimaginable power.

Theo must defeat the beast to slay a God!

Although low budget and only one big name actor in it (Rutger Hauer - in a small part), I was rather impressed by this blend of horror and fantasy.

This is based (unsurprisingly) on Theseus and the Minotaur legend, however most legends have some basis in fact and this film attempts to portray iron-age settlements being conquered and submitting to the whims of the long-lost Minoan sea-based empire which seemed to be ruled from modern-day Crete.

The script and story is simplistic but because of imaginative direction and some nice sets and good location-filming this comes across as a fast-paced historical horror-fantasy.

(Compared to the big budget film Troy, this film was filled with nice visual ideas about a lost culture with some interesting statues, costumes, e.t.c. Troy on the other hand seemed clueless)

Moments in the catacomb scenes with the pursuing beast reminded me of `The Descent' and it had some interesting ideas about the lost Minoan empire, such as the rulers getting high on drugs and using the same methods to sedate the victims of "the beast".
The baddie was Tony Todd , perhaps best known for his role as 'The Candyman' and he seemed to be enjoying the part of the Minoan King and using his voice to good menacing effect.
The only slight gripe is that the Minoans would have been Greek or Greek-looking rather than African-looking, as Herodotus clearly tells us that the last survivors of their race relocated to northern Greece and shared some of their technological innovations with the locals (arguably helping with their sudden advancement).

But for a bit of low-budget escapisim its not bad!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Hardy at his very best! 27 Mar 2012
By fil,
This is a must see for any fan of Tom Hardy. He give one of his best perfomances and show s what a truly gifted actor he is. The monster beast is terrifying, the fight scenes are some of the best I've ever seen and the twist in the tail left me flabbergasted. I heartily recommend this for anyone who loves excellent fantasy. A keeper!Deserter [DVD]Bronson DVDRocknrolla [DVD] [2008]Inception [DVD] [2010]

2.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre Budget Remake of the Minotaur Myth 8 Jun 2011
By Dr Mike
Dont get your hopes up with this film. Rutger Hauer appears in the first 10 minutes of the film as the aged father of Theo (Theseus is the hero from mythology). The story follows a group of young youths and maidens sent to be sacrificed to King Minos Minotaur - (A punishment for killing a prince of Minos' kingdom). I always thought the minotaur was from Crete, a large island south of modern day Turkey. But the boat seems to have travelled to Nubia, with Tony Todd doing an admirable job as the lunatic king obsessed by his beautiful sister who he wants to marry. He repeatedly takes 'hits' from a shell filled with a mind-altering gas. The CGI is laughable - the Minotaur looks like a huge defleshed bull with a bull's skull head. The creature stalks the young maidens and youths goring them to death one by one - as they scream and shout at each other To be quiet! Its mindless entertainment - on par with Xena or Hercules but with a bit of gore added

3.0 out of 5 stars Minotaur review 3 Feb 2013

Tom Hardy is a great character actor but the plot and supporting cast for this film is poor. Not much action or interest in the film. One to add to the Tom hardy collection though.
