Great Book With The Right Accompaniments,
By
This review is from: Minna No Nihongo: Bk. 1 (Paperback)
I have been using this book for nearly a year now and I have to say I am very happy with it. However, it is necessary to use other books along with this one before you can reap the benefits.
When I enrolled on my Japanese course we were told to buy this book along with Minna No Nihongo: Translation and Grammatical Notes Bk. 1 and Shin Nihongo no Kiso: Kana Workbook (in Japanese). Without these two books I would not have been able to use Minna No Nihongo 1 as it is written entirely in Japanese script. However if you can already read Hiragana and Katakana it would not be necessary to also use Shin Nihongo No Kiso. With the grammatical notes I have found this book to provide useful vocabulary and information on sentence structure. It has exercises that you can complete for practice although; if you want to complete all of the tasks (including the listening questions) it is necessary to buy yet another product that includes the Minna No Nihongo CD's. One of my major concerns with this product is that without the help of a Japanese speaking teacher to guide me I am not sure that this book would be particularly useful. The grammatical notes are very helpful but I find that for a total beginner the fact that Minna No Nihongo 1 is written entirely in Japanese script it is a little off putting, especially considering that not everything within Minna No Nihongo 1 is actually translated in the grammatical notes. Overall, I am very happy with this product and it has greatly facilitated my learning of Japanese but without the use of a teacher and a prior knowledge of basic sentence structure I would not suggest that you buy this book.

Minna no Nihongo is not the best book for intermediate learners,
By
This review is from: Minna No Nihongo: Bk. 1 (Paperback)
This is already the second book we use in our japanese evening classes in Germany. Using this book requires an intermediate level in japanese, because this textbook is a monolingual edition. It is necessary to know at least all Hiragana and Katakana. Kanjis are translated into Hiragana, although the translation is written in very tiny letters above the Kanji in question.
The monolingual edition offers the advantage, that the student must learn the alphabets and new vocabulary regularly, otherwise he is not able to understand the texts and tasks. But how do you learn new vocabulary, if this book offers no lists? Every single word you want to learn must be translated and explained in all forms by your teacher. The book offers no summary. Of course one is able to get all words translated, but in return you have to buy a different book, for example "Minna No Nihongo: Kanji - English Edition Bk. 1". The same with grammar: this edition offers absolutely no explanations, only some excercises. The grammar is explained in another book, which is "Minna No Nihongo: Translation and Grammatical Notes Bk. 1". The one big disadvantage Minna no Nihingo offers is that you cannot use one book alone to learn Japanese. You have to buy several more books for an complete overview. And in Europe these books are rather expensive. This is why I rated this book with only three of five stars. For learners in german speaking countries I rather recommend one of these books: "Nihongo de dooso" oder "Japanisch im Sauseschritt".

Good Starter Textbook for in the Classroom,
By
This review is from: Minna No Nihongo: Bk. 1 (Paperback)
This was the first text book that I used to study Japanese at university (starting with no background in Japanese).
The entire text book is written in Hiragana and Katakana so before starting you really need to be familiar with them. Kanji have furigana (tiny little hiragana above the kanji which are quite a strain on the eyes) This book alone offers no grammar explanations so the accompanying translation and grammatical notes are necessary (grammar dictionaries could be used instead if you wanted, but it wouldn't be nearly as convenient) which includes the translation of example sentences, vocabulary list and grammar explanations. There is a separate book for learning kanji. The book has plenty of grammar exercises and comes with an answer book. There are also CDs and Videos for listening, an extra book full of practice exercises (which I particularly liked) and another book full of reading comprehension, as well as a kanji book. I own all of them (for both minna no nihongo 1 and 2) EXCEPT the videos, cds and Kanji books, mostly because of price. The video is really quite ridiculous but if you can manage to hold your laughter it is quite good if you want to see examples of situational Japanese. We used different books for Kanji (Basic Kanji book by Bonjisha co., ltd) If you're studying this alone it's quite hard to keep motivation. You must have the grammar book that accompanies it which I believe offers excellent explanations, but they are sometimes a little too narrow. Very good for grammar drills. extremely basic but good to form Japanese foundations.
