Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda direct this feature length spin-off and prequel to the 2010 hit 'Despicable Me'. Throughout history, and before Gru, the Minions have served many a despicable master, including Genghis Khan, Napoleon and Dracula. But having contributed to their masters' downfalls through a series of mishaps, the Minions find themselves living in Antarctica with no one to serve. A number of years pass and it isn't until 1968 that dispirited Minions Kevin, Stuart and Bob (all voiced by Coffin) set off to New York City to attend a villain convention and find themselves a new master. Here they meet the ambitious and dastardly Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), who, with the help of her husband Herb (Jon Hamm), plans to take over the world...

Minions is a prequel to the "Despicable Me" series. It takes place in 1968 and does not bogart on 60's references or music. As an adult familiar with the era, I most likely enjoyed the film more than the kids who were clueless to most of the music and references.
The Minions seek out Scarlett Overkill voiced by Sandra Bullock, the top villain of the era. She wants the crown of England and tasks 3 Minions to obtain it for her. As always with Minions, the film becomes a comedy of errors, some predictable, some not.
It seems "okay" is a universal word.

Whilst I can't review the actual dvd/blu-ray release yet, I thought I'd put some minds to rest. The movie is fantastic, for adults and kids. My wife and I took our 3 kids (ages 3, 6, 9) and we all loved it. The story is easy to follow for the kids, the characters are great and more importantly plenty of minions. One review said the hanging scene was inappropriate for kids (helllooooooo, Tom and Jerry, looney tunes etc) it's animation for crying out loud. If you love the minions from the previous films then you'll love this.

In the despicable me movies, the minions are the highlight, because, as side characters, they are not the main focus of the narrative, so while Gru is the centre, the minions provide the slapstick those movies desperately need.
So inevitably, the spin-off movie arrives, and also inevitably, it's not as funny as you would want it to be. It's hard to imagine, but halfway through the movie, you begin to experience minion fatigue, and you begin to realise that they are much funnier in small doses.
Overkill, and other secondary characters don't have the depth or the personality as Gru and others from the other movies, and she ends up sounding like a spoilt brat for the majority of her screen time.
There are some really funny moments though, the opening ten minutes (even though the majority of it is in the trailer), is a work of genius, and the attempt at stealing the Crown Jewels is also a highlight, it's just that the rest of the movie feels like little sketches added to a thin plot.
The sixties setting though is a brilliant idea, the soundtrack is hilariously genius, and Saunders steals the show as the Queen.
So all in all, it's a little bit of a wasted opportunity, proving that the titular characters, as hilarious as they are, a better as comic relief to Gru, but hey, there's merchandise to be sold isn't there?
Still just about worth seeing though.

This film tells us about the creation of the Minions, their purpose to serve the biggest, baddest villain and…BANANA!!! Minions are born as mischievous, magical creatures looking like yellow jellybeans; a cute pill. They speak many different languages which they combine to make minionese. Minions are magical beasties that adore bananas. Hilariously hilarious yellow creatures trying to find a boss, but can they find one to keep forever. There are astonishing moments in the Minions film so maybe you want to take one home. Starring Minions, Bob, Kevin and Stuart this sure-fire prequel is already a massive hit.
They try many masters, their first being a T-rex, a caveman, Dracula, Napoleon and many more. Bob, Kevin and Stuart adventure into the world to bravely search for an evil mastermind. Scarlett Overkill, the world’s greatest villain will prepare to fight against the Minions. Three Minions stand up against her to rebel.
This outstanding comedy comes with metal jet-packs, gun-firing dresses and non-stop action. It is a very funny film with a good sense of humour. See this highly recommended prequel, comedy and family story of yellow creatures who try to find the most dangerous master to serve. This is a breathtaking film, from the yellow creatures that step from the sea to finding their dream of a despicable master. A recommendation for children looking for little friends wearing denim dungarees. Minions has exciting slices, frightening slices and slices of…BANANA!!!!

My friends and I are Minion mad, even thogh we are of a 'mature' age group! we went to the cinema last week to see this film and laughed our old heads off! even more than the younger audience in attendance! When the dvd arrives we will be holding another 'Minions Party' and probably will watch all 3 back to back whilst eating banana pie, banana ice-cream and banana sandwiches! whilst wearing our Minion T-shirts. Love the little yellow cuties! also loved the setting of the film, in the 60's with music we could sing along to!!

If you love the minions you will love this. We went to the cinema as a family and we all laughed out loud along with the rest of the public...especially the mums who were laughing as loud as the kids. The hanging scene is in context with the film so not inappropriate. The story is easy to follow and comes to a clever conclusion. The scene where a minion has extended legs through the queens parade is brilliant. This film is as it should be...well written...well brought to the screen and a good laugh for the family.

'Minions' is an excellent prequel to the hugely popular 'Despicable Me' movies, with those little yellow fellas taking centre stage. At 22 years of age, me and my friend, who is three years older than myself, probably looked a little out of place when viewing this gem that the cinema, but I didn't care, great films will always appeal to varied age groups, and this is most certainly one of them.
Set in the 1960s, we learn about the creations of the Minions, mischievous and cute creatures that they are. Minion Kevin, along with his two buddies Stuart and Bob, find themselves serving the world's first-ever super-villainess, the fearsome Scarlet Overkill, and landing themselves in hot water in a mad-cap adventure in London.
The voices to the characters are provided by a talented cast of performers, including Steve Coogan as Professor Flux, and Jennifer Saunders as the Queen of England. Sandra Bullock stars as Scarlet Overkill, and although I initially thought that this lovely lady's voice was too nice to portray the villainess, she did a good job I have to say.
Plenty of laugh-out-loud throughout moments are assured, as well as an excellent soundtrack, with original hits by '60s icons like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix, and as the credits roll, Scotland's finest folk singer Donavan. There are also some suitable adult jokes thrown in to keep the grown-ups entertained, along with the children.
I really enjoyed 'Minions', and urge you to watch it at the cinema now. This is one 3D-animated family film that will find its way in my DVD collection upon it's release later in the year.
