Product Description

Synopsis

The traditional image of an encyclopedia as a large, heavy volume only occasionally taken down from a dusty shelf is blown out of the water by this new range of mini-encyclopedias. These are comprehensive, concentrated packages of up-to-date practical guidance on a variety of fishkeeping and water gardening themes. The core text is amplified and extended by panels, captions and annotations that accompany the photographs and graphic illustrations. The first part of each volume consists of a hands-on practical section that follows the step-by-step progress of a specific project. Accompanying text includes technical advice on the equipment required to complete each stage of the project. The second part features a wide range of species or varieties relevant to the subject. These profile sections are profusely illustrated with stunning colour photographs and are designed to inspire readers to expand their collections. By combining practical and reference sections, these mini encyclopedias represent the ideal compromise in a world where shelf space is limited but the thirst for knowledge increases every day.

From the Inside Flap

This mini encyclopedia is packed with sensible advice and practical guidance. The first part shows how to set up a freshwater tropical aquarium in the home. Part two explores further aspects of fishkeeping, including how to choose and use aquarium plants plus advice on feeding, breeding, health care and routine maintenance. Part three presents a wide-ranging selection of suitable fish, including details of their origin, ideal aquarium conditions, compatibility and breeding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for the beginner 8 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
A very good book for the beginer as is gives information from setting up the tank to choosing the right fish. An extensive list of fish with detailed information on their origins and the care they need. I bought a couple of books but this is the one we turn to most often when we need advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Tropical Fish 20 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this book when I was just starting out in the hobby and have referred to it ever since. It tells you pretty much everything you will need to know. I have since bought far more expensive books but this is still the favourite.

5.0 out of 5 stars mini encyclopedia 9 Mar 2012

Excellent product! Have a few different books on fish keeping but this is one of my favorites for general advice, includes tank set up, plant and breeding etc. A great section on fish breeds that helps decide which fish are compatible to keep together and what tank specification such as size are required. Whilst your aquarium seller can advise you on your fish purchases its good to have an idea of the type of fish you would like to keep. Does not have all the fish stocked at local aquariums (would be a massive book otherwise) but covers a lot of of the more popular breeds without naming all the variations of that breed which keeps it concise. Would defiantly recommend to tropical fish keepers or anyone with an interest in fish

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for starters 28 Nov 2011
By MrsE
Format:Paperback
This book is perfect for people who, like me, want to find out about keeping tropical fish before committing to buy anything expensive.

I read it cover to cover and even now I'm all set up I still find myself referring to the book to make sure I'm doing things correctly. It is one of the only books that I've looked at that describes the nitrogen cycle properly, and details how to cycle your tank to ensure your fish stay healthy.

The listings for different fish species at the back of the book is an excellent place to start deciding what fish to stock your tank with. Being a small book there is obviously not space to list all the fish you'll see in your local fish shop, but it gives a very good foundation to build on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners 24 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great book for beginners. Covers all the basics including setting up an aquarium, choosing fish, dealing with illnesses and a bit on breeding. It has an extensive section on different fish, it didn't cover everything that my local pet shop stocked, but it covers the most popular fish. The size is good as you can take it along when choosing your fish.

3.0 out of 5 stars more information needed
This is an ok book. It would be much better if it had information on fish lifespan and fish size. I would have thought this would be standard information in an encyclopedia.
