Product Description

All six episodes of the drama series written by Russell T. Davies. Eccentric Max (Griff Rhys Jones) has always believed that he secretly owns the deeds to the whole of Swansea, because of an ancient ancestral document that has been in his family for generations. When he has the document authenticated, his family are shocked to find out that it's true. Before long, Max is trying to make the whole city go along with his way of doing things, to the irritation of his long-suffering wife.

Synopsis

Griff Rhys Jones stars as bumbling eccentric Max, alongside Ruth Madoc, in a darkly comic tale of love, betrayal and reality television, created by Russell T Davies, the highly acclaimed writer of the TV dramas Bob and Rose, Queer as Folk and The Second Coming.

Max Vivaldi doesn't have much in life, but he does have a dream. According to a faded legal document written in the year 1710, his family owns the whole of Swansea. The will has been passed down through twelve generations and is now framed on the living room wall of the Vivaldi household.

His neighbours, his friends, even his wife and three children, all laugh at Max whenever he brings up the subject of his inheritance - just as his father and his father before him were ridiculed for their declarations. The Vivaldi claim is a running joke in this picturesque part of the South Wales coast. Max thinks he owns the area where he lives, known as 'the Mumbles', but everyone else thinks it's a load of mumbo jumbo.

Until one day his incredible claim is proved to be true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behold the orbs! 20 April 2006
This was easily one of the highlights of TV in 2004, and definitely the best thing to grace ITV. Sadly it didn't do the business in the ratings - so if you missed out on the chance to see it, don't make that mistake twice.

Sharply scripted with warmth, wit and a certain darkness (as you'd expect from Russell T Davies), beautifully acted, and for once a primetime drama that wasn't set in London or Manchester. Perhaps the 'Welshness' put off a mainstream audience? If so, it's a shame because it's genuinely refreshing to see Welsh people and places on screen (a tactic being used more recently, but not as obviously, in the rather more successful Doctor Who relaunch). Its original central idea also works in its favour in a world full of dull police, hospital and legal dramas.

Buy this, and settle down for six episodes of television bliss.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gotta be Welsh 16 Feb 2009

I guess you have got to be Welsh to really love this series. Brilliant portrayal of Welsh life by Russell Davies and all the actors involved, especially the Mother ! It had good reviews at the time but there are two reasons why it perhaps never reached a zenith: 1) It was up against another excellent series "Blackpool" broadcsat at exactly the same time 2) because the series was only allotted five nights, Russell had to condense two episdoes (5 and 6) into one and there are some ropey edits. The continuity therefore really fell apart.
On the dvd however, we have the missing episodes in full and the commentary by Russell davies on the first episodes reveal what a funny and likeable man he is.
