Amazon.co.uk Review

Orly's Draw-a-Story is a fun and imaginative CD-ROM which allows young children to draw their own pictures and then watch them come alive within animated stories.

To get started Orly and her best friend Lancelot the frog take you through a simple tutorial where you can practice drawing faces around large blinking cartoon eyes and add colours by clicking on big pencils. It's all simply explained and when you finish you sound a bell. Set in Jamaica and aimed at 5-to-10-year-olds, the activities use drawing tools designed to encourage all kinds of creative play--even the cursor is a fluttering blue butterfly.

At certain points in each narrated story, children are asked to draw and insert their own pictures (they can be scribbles or works of art). They are automatically inserted into the stories and brought to life. In the Make Your Own Storybook section, children can make up their own stories by drawing pictures and writing words and in the Doodle Pad area you can practice drawing to your heart's content.

When any story comes to an end, you can choose to save it in a chest or dump it in a bin that is full of rubbish including old fish bones. This entertaining title comes with a good, informative booklet and will support and encourage the emergence of young artists. --Justin Hunt

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun for budding artists, 20 Sep 2001

I bought this for my daughter as she felt left out when we bought a new computer... She draws pictures, colours in and writes her own stories and loves every minute. Much better than blasting aliens!! I would recommend it for girls who love drawing and colouring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Orly draws children into the story, 21 Jan 2001
By B Ellis (LONDON) - See all my reviews
Bought on recommendation I have to say that this is a great piece of software.

You child waches a story and then has to draw a picure of one of main characters. The picture then appears within the story - my four year old loves it.

The drawings can be pictures selected from a range given to them and painted using the paintbox and colour tools or pictures draw using the mouse. So its great for a younger child but has the scope to grow with the child as they improve mouse skills.

I love the character and the musical soundtrack and it is great to find a piece of software with a black child as the central character. The paint tools also had a range of (limited) skin tone paints to paint characters with.

Im sure you will enjoy this as much as you children will - well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun, fun, fun, 26 Oct 2001

I bought this game for my four year old son, he is not into colouring at all but when we put this onto the computer that all changed! He loves clouring the pictures in and the colour combinations are endless, especially with all the added patterns.
He also loves drawing the pictures for the stories, although he isn't so keen on making up his own stories yet!
Bright, easy to use and characters your child will fall in love with.
