Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

On the run and fighting for his life behind the Iron Curtain, Matt Carter, a freelance journalist finds himself in the midst of an international conspiracy that aims to control the U.S.S.R.

Twelve hours after arriving in Moscow for a routine story, Cater has been stripped of all possessions, beaten unconscious and thrown in the KGB's political prison.

Using only recovered weapons and improvised gadgets, he must now evade or overcome elite Soviet forces to defeat the conspiracy before he is sent to siberian prison camp or killed.

Cold War is the first game to bring next-generation stealth gameplay behind the Iron Curtain. Built by a team with first hand knowledge of the U.S.S.R. and utilizing advanced that extends the stealth combat seen in titles such as Splinter Cell, Cold War offers a unique and enticing game with broad appeal topically and gameplay deep enough to satisfy hard-core gamers. Gamers will fight, infiltrate and improvise to prevent the overthrow of the pro-GLASNOST Soviet goverment.

    Fun:
If you search for reviews of this game on the web, you'll find some real hatchet jobs: mediocre, failed imitation of the Sam Fisher games, and so on. Play it, and you may feel differently.

This probably is a game that climbed on the stealth bandwagon after the success of Splinter Cell - but SC itself was built on other games (the wonderful Thief series, most notably). But it is more than mere imitation: it has real character and atmosphere. Moreover, the gameplay is (for me, anyway) well judged: tricky, but not impossibly difficult - it's a game, not a job! Leaving the home-made gadgets to one side (they're fun, but not realistic), this is a lot more like real life than the absurd exploits of Mr Fisher!

Some critics have condemned the drab locations - and they are a lot less striking than many of the SC levels, it's true. But having myself visited factories and government installations in the Soviet Union, I can confirm that the air of dinginess and squalor is NOT exaggerated: this is how it was, even including the rubbish (with which our hero makes his gadgets).

So, if you want simple, absorbing, stealthy fun, exuding the musty, unwashed odour of a singular time in history, then buy this game.

    Fun:
Surprisingly good quality, quirky little stealth romp, easy to play and pleasing to the eyes (even by today's standards). By no means a substitute for Sam Fisher or even master Thief Garrett (my hero!!), but considering the price, not a bad way to spend a rainy weekend (or snowy weekend, for that matter, comrade...).
