Young campers can hike virtual mountains, trek through the woods and gather food while they search for items necessary to make their way out of the wild.
Arthur and his class take a camping trip to Mount Rockslide, but things don't quite go as planned: Arthur's teacher, Mr Ratburn, twists his ankle, and he needs his students' help to get to safety. And, to add to Arthur's worries, his bratty sister, DW, has tagged along. With strategic clicks of the mouse, kids help Arthur and his class survive the great outdoors by pitching tents, finding their way out of the wilderness and building the right rescue devices.
Six different activities provide virtual campers with hours of challenge and exploration. Along the way, youngsters can view an interactive nature notebook that describes more than 40 hidden surprises, including wildlife and wildflowers; they'll even earn a Junior Ranger certificate once they've found them all. (Arthur's nature notebook can also be printed for away-from-the-computer fun.) As children make their way through the game, they'll participate in a variety of outdoor adventures. Players help erect a tent by snapping colour-coordinated pieces of a tent frame into place, guide Arthur through a raging river by balancing on a log and take a wild canoe ride through logs, rocks and other dangerous river debris they must dodge. Unlike in the real outdoors, if they get stuck along the way, they can always ask DW for help.
Excellent animation and 21 different outdoor scenes make Arthur's Camping Adventure a program children will want to play again and again. When the weather is less than ideal for camping and your kids have the urge to commune with nature, this software is worth its weight in gold. --Tina Velgos
