Product Description

Product Description

In this illuminating and groundbreaking new book, food psychologist Brian Wansink shows why you may not realize how much you’re eating, what you’re eating–or why you’re even eating at all.

• Does food with a brand name really taste better?
• Do you hate brussels sprouts because your mother did?
• Does the size of your plate determine how hungry you feel?
• How much would you eat if your soup bowl secretly refilled itself?
• What does your favorite comfort food really say about you?
• Why do you overeat so much at healthy restaurants?

Brian Wansink is a Stanford Ph.D. and the director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab. He’s spent a lifetime studying what we don’t notice: the hidden cues that determine how much and why people eat. Using ingenious, fun, and sometimes downright fiendishly clever experiments like the “bottomless soup bowl,” Wansink takes us on a fascinating tour of the secret dynamics behind our dietary habits. How does packaging influence how much we eat? Which movies make us eat faster? How does music or the color of the room influence how much we eat? How can we recognize the “hidden persuaders” used by restaurants and supermarkets to get us to mindlessly eat? What are the real reasons most diets are doomed to fail? And how can we use the “mindless margin” to lose–instead of gain–ten to twenty pounds in the coming year?

Mindless Eating will change the way you look at food, and it will give you the facts you need to easily make smarter, healthier, more mindful and enjoyable choices at the dinner table, in the supermarket, in restaurants, at the office–even at a vending machine–wherever you decide to satisfy your appetite.

Life Changing Book 17 Jan 2007
By Mrs B
Format:Hardcover
I always wondered why as an intelligent woman who was well able to organise her life and set and achieve many goals that I was unable to control my weight. Of course, many weight loss regimes have many success stories, however for the majority they don't work or only work temporarily.

This book doesn't offer any nutritional advice but shows how we mindlessly allow weight to creep on and how we can just as easily let it creep off again. The changes suggested are subtle and yet easy to implement into a normal life and are sustainable in a longer term. If you are struggling with your weight and want to know how to retrain your eating without much real effort then please give this book a try.

Although the author offers many supporting scientific studies to support his statements it is far from being heavy and is a humourous and easy read.

This is a book written by a food research scientist, which has some really useful insights into how we eat without really thinking about it at all. Not only is it useful, it is funny, easy to read and entertaining all the way through. It got me thinking about why I eat (and drink)the way I do, the cues through each day which lead me to the cupboard. The author suggests that there is a margin of "mindless" eating, which is how most of us gain weight (slowly and without realising) and the same can be used to our advantage to lose weight in the same way. A fantastic book for anyone concerned about their weight, and also for those trying to help others with their eating difficulties. There is also a helpful website leading on from the book (read the book first).

Whilst we all know how much we should eat, this book explains how we easily we lose control of what we actually consume. It's full of interesting experiments with jumbo buckets of stale popcorn, bottomless soup bowls and cheap wine (with expensive labels) that demonstrate the different factors that influence our daily eating decisions.

Each chapter contains useful tips, and following really can help you lose weight - or at least identify your danger scenarios when you are likely to overeat.
