Book Description

1 April 2010
Dr. Terry Wahls links micronutrient starvation to the epidemics of chronic disease that are overtaking modern society. She explains the key roles mitochondria play in maintaining a healthy brain and body. Americans are eating so poorly, something we all know to be true, that the majority of Americans are missing key building blocks that are needed for brain cells to be healthy. The result is an epidemic of depression, aggression, multiple sclerosis and early dementia. She then teaches you how to eat for healthy mitochondria, a healthy brain and a healthy body in language that is clear and concise, even for those without a science background. In this book, Dr. Wahls explains basic brain biology in simple terms. She tells us what vitamin, mineral and essential fat building blocks are needed by the mitochondria and other key structures in the brain. Then she explains what foods are good sources for those key nutrients. Over a hundred recipes are provided to help get you started on this new way of eating. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to fund research into the benefits of these interventions in others.

About the Author

Her body ravaged by secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, Dr. Terry Wahls spent nearly four years dependent upon a tilt-recline wheelchair. Now, thanks to the intensive, directed nutrition and neuromuscular electrical stimulation protocols she developed, Dr. Wahls now rides her bicycle to work. She has brought together an interdisciplinary team to conduct clinical trials using intensive, directed nutrition and neuromuscular electrical stimulation to combat advanced Parkinson's disease and secondary and primary progressive multiple sclerosis. She is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she sees teaches residents and medical students in primary care and rounds in traumatic brain injury clinics. She is also committed to helping the public learn about the connection between the foods we eat and the health we have or do not have and lectures nationally and regionally on the use of intensive, directed nutrition to restore health. I was very unsure about this diet at first, as it seemed to clash so strongly with so many of the wonderful health and diet books I had been reading.

Wahl's recommendation of a low fat diet that was also very low in saturated fat is the opposite of what highly respected lipid expert Mary Enig PhD recommends, and what is recommended - based on a ton of very convincing evidence - in so many other great books based on maintaining or regaining health through eating the diet our bodies have evolved to do best on, such as Primal Body- Primal Mind, Primal Blueprint, The Perfect Health Diet, Eat Fat-Lose Fat, The GAPS diet and others.

So when a friend told me that in fact Dr Wahl has very much changed her stance on fats and saturated fat and now recommends cooking with healthy fats such as coconut oil, butter/ghee (from grassfed cows) and lard, I was really happy to hear it!

With that one big issue resolved, this is a diet that tallies hugely with what some of the very best experts in this field are saying and combines the best of what many excellent nutrition books have to say into one dietary plan that I feel is really the best diet out there for anyone battling a serious disease. It is just excellent. I recommend following it if you are ill, very highly.

Patients need to read up online about the changes Wahl has made in addition to reading this book, or else just get the information of the diet online while making sure it is up-to-date. (I hope so much that those that have written very pro-low fat fat diet comments about this book on the reviews page will read this updated information somehow. The right fats in the diet are so essential for healing, and for proper mitochondrial function.

This very helpful book has accompanied me for the past nine months since I started this diet. I have moderate Parkinson's disease, and 61 years old. My symptoms have all decreased, and some of them have disappeared completely. My friends tell me I look 10 years younger, and I have no visible symptoms of Parkinson's.

Dr Wahls wrote this book for fellow MS sufferers, but I have proved its worth in another neurological condition.

The book is a combination of autobiography, medical and dietary theory which is easier to read than you would think, and suggestions for dietary change with some very useful recipes. I would recommend this to sufferers from any neurological condition.

This lady writes excellent informative books and I have taken a lot of advice from them which has really helped my health improve. Excellent book, quite technical but gives you a great understanding of autoimmune problems and perhaps why some people no matter how much they have done to be proactive with healthcare have not managed to get any better. The penny dropped when I read this book and so glad I found Terry Wahls. She has been a life saver, literally.
Highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read 21 Oct 2012

The explinations & theories in this book are clear & concise. The author is a doctor & I was concerned that I may not understand the "scientific speak". I was pleasantly surprised. There are quite a few interesting recipies, using all the ingredients that are supposed to work towards conditioning the "Mitochondria" which are so important for the health of the cells in the body. The recipies are also very do-able, & use many of my favourite foods, so I'm quite encouraged.

5.0 out of 5 stars A credible read 28 Jan 2013

I recommend this book. There is so much information available to us advising what to do should we have the misfortune to suffer ill health that we can get confused. Worse still some of the information is speculative if not ill. This book is written by a doctor who has, through her own efforts, found a solution to overcome MS. She is extremely generous to share her advice with us each we can trust.

Dr Terry Wahls has given me a route to recovering from Parkinson's Disease, rather than accepting inevitable decline.

According to my consultant neurologist, I have mild to moderate Parkinson's Disease. My chiropractor Dr Uri Feldinger, told me about Terry Wahls in March 2012. I had already decided to take medical early retirement next year.

I started on the diet on 25 May 2012. For the first few days I had a terrible headache, yet immediately my energy levels shot up. In the second week I felt great, better than for 15 years, and everybody has started to say "how well you look" and "how much energy you have". I have lost 15lbs weight, and started going to the gym.

I planned to go on the Wahls diet as a trial for a month - but I will never go back to my old diet. My tremors are less, barely detectable, my voice is stronger, and the fatigue has gone. I'm still going ahead with early retirement, but look forward to long walks and exercise programs in the gym.

For everyone with MS or Parkinson's, ME or other neurological conditions - try the Wahls Diet! You have nothing to lose!
