Creepy, tense and enigmatic, Renny Harlin's Mindhunters is a grizzly cross between Agatha Christie's whodunnit classic And Then There Were None and Jonathan Demme's horrifying The Silence of the Lambs. An interesting ensemble cast including Christian Slater (Windtalkers), Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), L.L. Cool J (Harlin's Deep Blue Sea)and Kathryn Morris (television's Cold Case) portray promising FBI profilers-in-training. Val Kilmer plays their ambiguous instructor putting the candidates through their paces and leaving them for a weekend on a spooky island, where those who survive a terrifying exercise--penetrating the mind of a serial killer via elaborate clues--will go to the head of the class. But the rules change when the students themselves turn out to be victims, bumped off one after another, the survivors half-mad with suspicion and paranoia that the murderer is one of their own. The film's concept is sound even if the execution (so to speak) gets out of hand with problems of logic. Among other things, none of these characters could possibly find time to pull off some of the psychopath's more complicated killing rituals. Quibbles aside, however, Mindhunters is particularly watchable if one is in the mood for a movie that plays mind games. --Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure, 8 Nov 2005
This review is from: Mindhunters [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Who could have expected anything from this film? It bombed in the US and had bad reviews, and didn't even make it to the screens in Europe so only rented it out because there was nothing else.

Yet I really really enjoyed it. After a slow start, it just gets better and better, with many neat twists and surprises (the first death got us gasping, you'll see...), left us wondering about the identity of the killer, and thanks to the R rating, had some nasty and gory deaths which were totally unexpected! It's not groundbreaking, but is certainly smart and the tension is kept going throughout the whole film.

Not sure if it is worth buying, but most definitely worth renting at least, I wish I had seen it at the pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever and Exciting Mindthriller, 10 Jan 2007

This is an excellent thriller with a very simple tale involving a group of psychologists on an island hunting for a killer. What starts off as a game soon becomes less of a game and more a matter of survival, with such big names that some unfortunately get bumped off much too early making you think that this is going to be a bad movie makes this even better for being a great movie. The means of death and the traps are quite simply brilliant and the twists are great with everyone having a reason to kill each other. Great movie if straight to video.

I spotted this dvd in the video shop and had never even heard of it, but with all the big names starring in it like Val Kilmer and Christian Slater I figured it was worth watching. It turned out to be the best film I've seen all year. Its an edge of your seat thriller which leaves you guessing as to the killers identity literally right to the end. Fairly scary stuff too with some gruesome deaths. So good that I went out the next day and bought it! An excellent film, I'm really amazed as to why it never made it to the cinemas in Europe! See this film as soon as possible.
