Overall I think this book is well worth reading as a good introduction to the subject of Mindfulness Meditation. The first chapter in particular is extremely good in outlining the key characteristics of the practice. Detailed description of the practice comes much later in the book and is extremely brief, although one must acknowledge that the practice of MM is essentially very simple, in that it involves wakefully attending to the current experience, whatever that might be. I think the author could have offered more commentary about how to deal with the inner monologue that inevitably arises with MM practice.
On the downside, the author comments often upon the soul and to the spirit or spiritual quest. Reference is also made in several places to the Self, the Higher Self and the true Self; also to Self-realization. These terms are not explained and I suppose many people, especially religious people, would say, "Well everyone knows what the spirit or soul is". My point is that an atheist reader would say, "Well actually no one knows what this is, because it is a fiction." Similarly, many readers might say, "Self? What Self? There is no real and abiding Self, there is no `ghost in the machine'; there is only the concept of it, built by thought in words and images, therefore purely symbolic and temporary."
I think these points about the spiritual quest and the realization of the higher self ought to have been given far better coverage; after all, the author is writing about what is essentially Vipassana Meditation, which is Buddhist in origin.

A few years ago I had dabbled in meditation and found it helpful recently decided to go back to this through reading some books and buying a CD, wish I had read this book 1st as it is in plain English and helps you get a beginners insight' thank you for today

Meditation is something we sometimes associate with Indian gurus and Tibetan monks only.

This is a sweet reminder of benefits the meditation can bring you in easy to digest format, Including several forms of meditation techniques for your everyday use.
