Review

'If I could select one group of individuals for people to really pay attention to when grappling with chronic unhappiness, I could not think of a better group than these authors. Not only are they consummate scientists, but they are each personally immersed in the moment-to-moment mindfulness that they teach. This book brings together the contemplative practices of both science and insight meditation in an effective fashion that is understandable to the ordinary person - no esoteric practice or mental health background is necessary. Read it and see for yourself!' - Marsha M. Linehan, Department of Psychology, University of Washington, USA

'A revolutionary treatment approach. For depression sufferers, this is a truly useful guide to achieving emotional balance. For mental health professionals, it should be mandatory reading. I recommend this book and companion CD most highly.' - Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence

'An invaluable resource not only for those who suffer from depression, but for anyone familiar with the downward spiral of negative thinking and self-doubt. The authors of this book explore the reasons for depression and give us guidance and support, along with useful tools to find a way through it.' - Sharon Salzberg, author of The Force of Kindness

'Using mindfulness training to prevent and treat depression is a novel strategy in the West, though it is a traditional application of Eastern meditation practice. Whether you struggle with depression or simply want to understand your mind and emotions better, you will find this book accessible and useful. Depression is epidemic in our society, and I would love to see this sensible treatment approach gain ground.' - Andrew Weil, author of 8 Weeks to Optimum Health and Healthy Aging

"This work is a culmination of the many years of expertise and talent that the four authors have to share....They have carefully crafted the explanation of the cycle of depression utilising a cognitive-behavioural model. The concept of prevention of depression starts here and continues throughout the package....Practitioners and clients will find exercises both within the book and on the CD that can be helpful to include in a treatment plan." - Therapy Today, UK

"Every word in this affordable paperback seems to embody the gentleness and the spirit of openness that one brings to the practice of MBCT. It is therefore an ideal tool for guided self-help....Invaluable for all non-professionals and therapist alike, The Mindful Way through Depression takes the reader step by step on a journey of exploration....Just get the book, get your bottom on the cushion and read it." Florian Alexander Ruths, British Journal of Psychiatry, December 2007

5.0 out of 5 stars For those willing to take resonsibility for thier own mind., 17 Oct 2009
I found this book to be inspirational - it puts your life back into your own hands; you don't have to be depressed to read it or to obtain some good from it, because mindfulness is for anyone who wants some peace of mind. This book clarifys mindfulness very simply, but you have to be firstly willing to accept that you're own thinking is the source of your stress and upset. There's a book called The Awakening of Spiritual Awareness which highlights the process of mindfulness or present moment awareness which this book describes beautifully - of moving from a depressive state to one of wholeness through mindfulness. Together they make up the complete mindfulness/spiritual awareness and awakening package for anyone seeking to take responsibility for thier own mind!

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowledgeable, well written and very well worth buying, 22 Sep 2009
By A. M. Smith "Stair" (Northumberland, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having suddenly found my high stress job and teenage youth had made me ill, I was unable to function effectively and was off work for a long time, physical pains in my chest, trips to A&E to check for heart problems, tears, panic attacks the whole thing.
GP suggested stress management option rather than pills and I agreed. Readers will probably know that there are a lot of "naff" self help books but this is not one of them - this is a well researched, well written manual by people who obviously know what they are talking / writing about. Simply knowing that there are classic symptomatic states of mind that you can identify with is a great help of itself - being taught well established techniques to deal with them is even better - especially when you find that they actually work and it is possible to get through.
The accompanying audio is very well worth persevering with and it has done me a world of good - I am far better now than I ever expected to be.
If you are in a mess and would like to know that you can help yourself to genuinely get better, this is a very good place to start - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars It answers the questions, 24 Jul 2009
By A. Barnes "TinPan" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book is an easy to follow read with exercises to complete throughout and the eight week full programme at the end of the book. I found this format informative as many questions which pop into your head are answered before you start to programme proper, therefore allowing you to get the full benefit. It reinforces throughout that this is not a 'miracle cure' but a process which can be built upon to gain a better understanding of depression and the associated symptoms. The authors are obviously experts in their fields, though they write in a non-jargon, non-academic way. I have investigated Mindfulness via other books, however this is the most informative and helpful. An excellent book for anyone who is/has suffered from depression, or for anyone who knows someone with depression.
