Review

'If I could select one group of individuals for people to really pay attention to when grappling with chronic unhappiness, I could not think of a better group than these authors. Not only are they consummate scientists, but they are each personally immersed in the moment-to-moment mindfulness that they teach. This book brings together the contemplative practices of both science and insight meditation in an effective fashion that is understandable to the ordinary person - no esoteric practice or mental health background is necessary. Read it and see for yourself!' - Marsha M. Linehan, Department of Psychology, University of Washington, USA

'A revolutionary treatment approach. For depression sufferers, this is a truly useful guide to achieving emotional balance. For mental health professionals, it should be mandatory reading. I recommend this book and companion CD most highly.' - Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence

'An invaluable resource not only for those who suffer from depression, but for anyone familiar with the downward spiral of negative thinking and self-doubt. The authors of this book explore the reasons for depression and give us guidance and support, along with useful tools to find a way through it.' - Sharon Salzberg, author of The Force of Kindness

'Using mindfulness training to prevent and treat depression is a novel strategy in the West, though it is a traditional application of Eastern meditation practice. Whether you struggle with depression or simply want to understand your mind and emotions better, you will find this book accessible and useful. Depression is epidemic in our society, and I would love to see this sensible treatment approach gain ground.' - Andrew Weil, author of 8 Weeks to Optimum Health and Healthy Aging

"This work is a culmination of the many years of expertise and talent that the four authors have to share....They have carefully crafted the explanation of the cycle of depression utilising a cognitive-behavioural model. The concept of prevention of depression starts here and continues throughout the package....Practitioners and clients will find exercises both within the book and on the CD that can be helpful to include in a treatment plan." - Therapy Today, UK

"Every word in this affordable paperback seems to embody the gentleness and the spirit of openness that one brings to the practice of MBCT. It is therefore an ideal tool for guided self-help....Invaluable for all non-professionals and therapist alike, The Mindful Way through Depression takes the reader step by step on a journey of exploration....Just get the book, get your bottom on the cushion and read it." Florian Alexander Ruths, British Journal of Psychiatry, December 2007

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm in two minds, 13 May 2009
By Cathy Jones "Wales Forever" (Crewe, Cheshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Suffering with Anxiety, O.C.D and Depression for many years, grappling with anti-depressants, CBT and talk therapies I thought " right lets try the stay at home, relax and slowly help yourself" route. Safe to say I had severe and unrelenting depression at the time and any person who has been through it or seen a loved one go through it know that it takes a hell of alot of energy and stamina to do the simplest of tasks, so if you are really badly suffering please do not try this book, you will only sit there and dwell on the fact it is yet another goal you not reached or thing you couldn't preform.

It is just alittle to complicated to be able to work through when you are at an extreme low but....

When the storm clouds are more just dark clouds and have lifted abit more and you can see yourself doing a few more tasks take it up then.

It is a good book with interesting ideas, facts and a none simpering tone, more of a down to earth but sincere air to it.

It is great for trying to get your head into focus and to relax so when you are at a better stage to tackle it more give it a shot then. It is not for the extremely depressed there is just to much you really need to think out and consentrate on.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful tool to add to the box, 15 April 2009
By A. Smith "Greenter21" (Alnwick, Northumberland United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having been off work with stress related / induced illness I was looking for techniques to help me address the causes of the symptoms and this book has been very useful.
It is well worth reading, if only for the factual information on why we follow the paths that we do and why a (mis-) application of mental techniques and habits that we use every day fail to work when applied to stressful situations, anxiety & depression. In fact it is worth reading for other reasons too and is readable.
The CD is useful and well produced, I ripped to my MP3 player and listen to it at lunchtime to good effect.
Do bear in mind that it takes time to address issues that have built up over a long period and there is no such thing as an instant fix, but I would say that this book is well worth buying.
Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, 7 Jul 2008
By Janie "Jane O'Neill" (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
This book is an excellent guide to the technique of mindfulness. The principles of mindfulness are essentially very simple but amazingly effective. It's something that we all forget to do, and this book serves as a powerful reminder to bring our attention away from our thoughts and into our experience. The authors are free of academic jargon and are clearly passionate and extremely knowledgeable about the benefits of mindfulness, and the book is clearly not just for people who might be suffering from depression. I recommend it highly along with Eckhart Tolle's the Power of Now, and Steve Taylor's Making Time Making Time: Why Time Seems to Pass at Different Speeds and How to Control It, which uses mindfulness as a way of living in the present and becoming free of the future and the past.
