5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than I remembered... 27 Mar 2010

I bought this boxset for my husband expecting just the ten seperate series but found the last two 'bonus' discs actually contain five additional episodes including Minder on the Orient Express. For value for money this set can't be beaten. I hadn't intended watching much of this but listening to my husband's laughter I found myself getting drawn in. Yes as other reviewers, and my husband, have said, the Terry years are much stronger - I didn't appreciate this until watching them back to back. However, for my money one of the funniest episodes of the whole collection is in a 'Ray episode' involving the policeman Mr Morley, the car he bought from Arthur and the hidden drugs. If you don't watch this episode you are really missing out. Everybody mentions Chisolm and Ryecott but Morley was a star too and is well worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value 26 Dec 2010

Really very pleased with this box set especially the price. Every episode is a pleasure to watch the acting is superb and very funny. The extras are brilliant and that includes the 3 short interviews with George Cole he talks about the early years, the middle years and the Gary Webster years.
I found that one of the episodes 'The Birdman Of Wormwood Scrubs' has a bit of interference (a bit fuzy in places) nothing to worry about propably to do with the age of that episode. Also some discs have some minor surface scratches (but i am not complaining as it must be a terrible job trying to package 33 discs into a box on a restricted time limit).
I always say that the old ITV were never much good at making sit-coms, but when it comes to comedy dramas they were the tops 'Minder' being the best they ever produced, closely followed by 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet'.
Like with all my Amazon orders this came perfectly well packaged and in good quick time. Thanks for reading my review!....

5.0 out of 5 stars An All-time TV Great 24 Nov 2011
By Keith M TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Minder is a difficult series to classify - comedy drama, I guess. All I know is it is one of the funniest and most entertaining series ever to have graced our TV screens. Also, for me, when Gary Webster replaced Dennis Waterman (post-1989), the series lost its original appeal and some of its spark.

The series contains two of the greatest TV comedy acting performances ever. George Cole is, of course, recognised by all (hopefully) as a comic genius, and indeed a true acting genius. But, equally, although only featuring in 24 episodes, Patrick Malahide's performance as 'cheerful Charlie' (Albert) Chisholm is absolutely key to the funniest episodes - it is noticeable to me that those episodes where he does not appear are generally weaker. He delivered some of the greatest lines of the series, such 'I'll take that Irish into custody' and 'Very tactful, you Welsh cretin!'. Of course, Malahide went on to feature in other great TV including The Singing Detective and numerous historical dramas (including Dickens).

Difficult, I know, but if I had to pick one standout episode it would be from Series 4, The Car Lot Baggers, featuring Jimmy Nail as the gypsy (I mean traveller) Nathan, and June Whitfield (who is after Arthur's cherry, allegedly). The script is pure comic poetry.

Incidently, given the quality of writing for the series, I did some quick digging into one of the most common episode writers, Tony Hoare (now sadly deceased). It appears Tony was a failed, getaway driver(!), and whilst in prison he wrote a novel, which he showed to the writer Alan Plater, and the rest is history (as they say).

A series which merits much repeated viewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice little box set to earn! 29 Nov 2011
By CJ1980
When the television world said goodbye to the Sweeney in 1978, ITV pushed Euston Films to produce a TV series that would succeed the tales of the flying squad and become another hit in it's own right. It was already decided that Sweeney star Dennis Waterman would be the star attraction and after a bit of talent spotting, Euston cast experienced actor George Cole (of the St Trinian's fame) as Waterman's co-star. Ultimately in 1979 Minder was born and another television revolution began.

After four years playing tough DS George Carter in the Sweeney, Dennis moved over to the opposite side of the fence to play a ex-con Terry McCann. Fresh out of the nick and trying deperately to earn an honest crust, Terry's criminal record means reliable employment is had to come by. The only source of income Terry can muster is using his former boxing skills as muscle for eastend 'ducker & diver' Arthur Daley (Cole) - a man with about as much spine as a jellyfish but with a solid heart of eastend values. The basis of the show is McCann finding himself 'loaned' out for muscle by the sly Arthur and finding himself in all manner of situations.

A very slow burner for ITV, it wasn't until the third series in 1982 that this excellent series really took off and became one of televisions greatest hits of the 1980s.

The show would go on to last almost fifteen years, with over 100 episodes filmed and aired over 10 series including a feature length film and various Christmas specials. This complete collection of every Minder installment is an absolute gem to own and provides enough enjoyable viewing time to last several months.

In my opinion, the show was at it's best during the first three series.
