Shot in Bulgaria and Canada, with a "Wes Craven Presents" caption--that doubtless has something to do with the producer being Craven's son--Mind Ripper started out as The Hills Have Eyes, Part 3 but turned into yet another re-run of the plot about the genetically-engineered super-being-cum-brain-eating-monster who gets loose in an underground research station and slaughters scientists one by one in grisly fashion. After most of the original cast members are killed, craggy Lance Henriksen turns up with his family to provide a fresh set of characters to be chased, menaced, jumped on, cranially sucked and splattered. The monster, acronymed THOR (Dan Blom), is a would-be suicide volunteered for a new serum created by the sinister GenTec Corporation. He turns into a bald steroid case with yellow contact lenses and a Cronenbergian brain-leeching tentacle tongue, and meagre attempts are made at wringing pathos out of his plight (uniquely, the monster has an irrelevant dream sequence in which he is killed by the heroine). It's competent but formulaic stuff, with reliable Henriksen carrying more than his weight at the head of a cast of then-unknowns, some of whom (Giovanni Ribisi, Natasha Gregson Wagner) have gone on to improve their careers.

On the DVD: there are frame captures passed off as a photo gallery and the trailer; and the picture is fullscreen. But what else can you expect?--Kim Newman

A preliminary word of caution - if you decide to invest in this DVD, you're probably better off buying it as part of the "The Wes Craven Collection", where is comes packaged with three other films and some interesting extras. As a stand-alone, this is a curate's egg - good in short parts.
The Wes Craven connection is most obvious in the credits - "Mind Ripper" (originally "The Outpost" and part of the "Hills Have Eyes" series) was written by his son, Jonathan, a boy, you imagine, who must have been steeped in the horror tradition from birth. Certainly, as a writer, he makes frequent use of the horror tradition ... or is that the science fiction tradition?
An abandoned nuclear dump (a recurring Wes Craven theme): scientists retrieve a near dead body and decide the only way to keep him alive is to inject him with the new designer virus - you know the one, the one with added free-radical macho and lanolin-enriched psycho, the one invented by the military to turn their grunts into roars and make super-troopers of the average soldier. Can you imagine what it would do to the Marines? This is a killing machine whose friendly fire oozes attitude!
As their patient hangs on in a coma, he seems to be developing super senses. His muscles, instead of atrophying through lack of exercise, somehow become enlarged, his joints become as well oiled and agile as an Olympic gymnast's. Well, a decent sleep will do wonders for a man.
Lance Henriksen plays the doctor/scientist who resigns when he realises things are overstepping the boundaries of his conscience ... and who returns, bringing his family with him (as you would), when he gets an urgent call from the secret, underground laboratory.
There's hardly a new idea to be glimpsed here.

One of the criteria on deciding what truly a bad film is is that you judge the film compared to how the producers ask the audience to perceive it. A film with so much self importance in its message, content or character development etc etc, but falls short on anything worthy of such self grandiose opinion, for me is the true sign of a bad movie. Coyote Ugly, She's All That, Bad Boys... for these, I'm chewing of my own fist in sheer embarrassment.

The flip side of this however would be a film which asks for nothing from the audience. When this occurs in a film such as this, it really is a so-bad-its-good film. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Its great fun after 20 minutes as you already know what is going to happen. You know the 'boy friend' character is going to die as, well, he's not too good looking and doesn't have many lines. You know Giovanni Rebisi will save the day as he's the disaffected teen who doesn't have Daddy's respect. You know who... well there's plenty more for you to guess at yourselves. I won't spoil the rest of the film. Though I lost count of how many times the monster comes back to life in the brilliantly ridiculous ending.

Open the beers and enjoy with friends... this should be a cult classic for all the wrong reasons. It should be given 1 star, but the unintentioned fun factor props it up to a worthy 3.

No no, come on, this is not as good as all that. A lot of stupid chasing around in caves, screaming, escaping... Fleeing away in an airplane in which one's hair isn't as much as waving in spite of the fact that all the windows are chattered... True, the genetically engineered evildoer has a great looking sixpack, but if you are satisfied by merely watching nice looking guys in a semi-boring horror setting, I suggest you pick a David Coteau flick, which probably features more naked skin and an equal amount of horror.
