DESCRIPTION

We are all visual learners, at least in part. We absorb information visually more than in any other way. Yet, visual literacy is mostly missing from mainstream education. So, how can elementary school students visually represent information and ideas to improve their ability to build on what they already know, think critically, and learn meaningfully?

This question is the central theme of Mind Mapping for Kids. MMFK offers elementary school teachers a blueprint for how to introduce mind maps in their classrooms to help students think more rigorously and increase engagement by transforming linear, static information into connected, dynamic maps.

Part I of the book discusses the fundamentals of mind mapping for teachers, parents, and students. Part II demonstrates how to use mind maps and the eight reading comprehension strategies to help students develop critical thinking and better comprehend what they’re reading. Part III provides 15 examples of mind mapping uses in school and at home and 5 templates to use in the classroom.

Give mind maps a try. They can be used independently or in conjunction with other literacy instruction programs. Either way, they will bring fun and excitement to the classroom while simultaneously improving thinking, reading, and learning.

FREE BONUS

To help you get started with mind maps, each book also comes with a free 6-month trial of ConceptDraw, DropMind, Inspiration, MindMeister, or XMind Pro. To get your free download code, e-mail the author with your proof of book purchase and program preference.

Poorly written, not worth looking at unless you have never ever heard of what a mind map is before, it is extremely basic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book on Mind Mapping and Learning Strategies 7 Dec 2012
By 60+ and still having fun - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Toni Krasnic is an established expert in coaching and student development who is well-known in mind mapping circles as a superstar. Mr. Krasnic has written an accessible, concise, and research-based book on using mind maps and other visual learning tools with beginning students. In my opinion, the methods Mr. Krasnic introduces will be an increasing part of elementary school education in the next few decades. Usually in mind mapping books, the method of mind mapping in one computer program or another is the primary focus of the book. Mr. Krasnic places the emphasis where it should be: on using mind mapping tools to SUPPORT EFFECTIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES. This is a book about learning and teaching and coaching and classroom exercises using visual learning methods. Mr. Krasnic does not tie the book to any commercial product but rather pairs the book content to learning theory, issues, and techniques. Many of the major mind mapping commercial products are introduced and there are many exceptional examples of mind maps that address real learning issues and support skill acquisition. This books is not about a flashy new computer program that makes pretty pictures. The book is about using powerful visual learning methods starting in elementary school and continuing through life to achieve mastery in many learning situations. 5.0 out of 5 stars Mind Mapping for Kids 11 Dec 2012
By Joyce M. Gilmour - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a retired teacher, who spent 36 years in the classroom, I was familiar with the concept of mind mapping that Toni Krasnic shares in Mind Mapping For Kids: How Elementary School Students Can Use Mind Maps To Improve Reading Comprehension and Thinking. However, I must say that I never had a resource that is this beneficial and forthright in providing the steps either a teacher or parent should take in guiding children on the path to learn how these mind maps can benefit their learning. Connecting mind maps to reading comprehension makes so much sense. Using the strategies of comprehension along with the mind maps provides such a powerful tool for children to use as they progress to higher and higher levels of thinking. The mind maps can just grow right along with them.

The fact that this is an ebook with links within it, is another tremendous addition to the success of learning via mind maps, in that there are many opportunities to check out other sources to back up the learning within Mind Mapping For Kids. Author Toni Krasnic also introduces the fact that there are many computer tools/programs that are available for mind mapping. Parents/Teachers can choose from any of them to incorporate into and enhance lessons, but the great thing is...a piece of paper and some colored pencils can work just as well (in my humble opinion).

As a former teacher, and parent of five, I highly recommend this resource. I will be using this tool for students in my tutoring sessions. Whenever we can paint a "verbal picture," our learning curve goes way up. Thank you, Toni Krasnic, for providing this affordable resource for parents and teachers. It is a tool that can be used across grade levels and across curriculum subjects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind Mapping - 21st Century Skill 3 Dec 2012
By Kendra Grant - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Concept maps and mind maps are important visual learning tools that help students take ownership of their learning as they build understanding. Whether you are new to visual learning or a lifelong "mapper", you will find a plethora of ideas and resources in Toni's clear, concise book that balances theory and research with practical explanations and examples. Through text, images and, of course, maps, he demonstrates how maps support higher order thinking skills and collaboration. Toni also provides examples of mind maps to show you possibilities, sharing a variety of map styles, software programs, and applications to use. Read this book to start creating your own maps, or better yet...with your students or child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids. 15 Dec 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I had reviewed Tony Krasnic's previous book, Concise Learning and was impressed by his ability to convey complex ideas. So when I received the review copy of Mind Mapping for Kids, I jumped right in. This is a great teacher resource and also serves as guide for the elementary student.

That this is an ebook has obvious advantages. Imbedded within the book are hyperlinks to other resources, so the reader is standing on a virtual mountain of ideas that elaborate and reinforce the concepts of mind mapping.

As in his earlier book for high school and college students, Tony presents his ideas with concise text and great illustrations. After all, mind mapping is a visual technique and benefits from the examples.

I highly recommend this book, not only for teachers, but also for parents. And not just parents of homeschooled kids, although they owe it to their children to incorporate this material into their home school program. In fact all parents can use the techniques to help their child manage their activities, read books and play games that reinforce their homework assignments.

As a side benefit, the parents may learn to manage their own lives better.
