More About the Author

James L. Clark is an internationally known polymath who believes his purpose on planet Earth is to serve others by being a loving, passionate, and powerful example of how to live a productive, meaningful, and positive life. He's a prolific author, seasoned traveler, adventurer, entrepreneur, producer, inventor, veteran, entertainer, and speaker-just to mention a few.

He holds a Masters of Business Administration, attended law school, and is the only America to have graduated with a Masters of Global Security from the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, at the Royal Military College of Science. He has an insatiable appetite for learning and personal growth, and continues to work towards other qualifications as time permits, including further post-graduate courses in eBusiness and marketing, and doctoral work in leadership and history.

James is also a reality television personality, presenter, actor, and as a practicing magician and mentalist, who has amazed audiences at private functions, corporate events, in the theatre, and on televisions all over the world.

And while all that may sound really cool, he doesn't think any of it matters a single bit unless he is using it to serve others. His true love will always be helping those in need; after wearing a uniform for most of his adult life, this dedicated humanitarian now volunteers his time to provide in-field emergency assistance and protective security services in current conflict theaters, former military operational zones, and in areas of extreme poverty, famine, or that have been affected by disasters such as fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, and tsunamis.

See http://www.bootsontheground.org (he has an up-coming book on Haiti)

James has always been the kind of guy who does, rather than talks. You may have gathered that already. He learned a long time ago that talk is, as the saying goes, cheap. That only results matter. So he prides himself on learning, growing, sharing, giving, serving, and loving--the rest is just for fun.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is not the book you were thinking of 11 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought this book in the hope I could learn maybe three or four neat little tricks that I could use as ice-breakers when I go to do group-work or simply to amuse friends at work/in the pub.
In actual fact, I haven't come away with one effect that I either want to learn or wish to see performed again.

Although the book is written with undeniable passion for the subject matter, the effects themselves are plain old dull and I couldn't see them entertaining many people (the section on cloud busting though mercifully brief, is utterly pathetic).

The effects that might be described as half decent involve elaborate props that would have to be bought or built and I for one just couldn't be bothered. Any idiot (or Dummy) can browse a magic shop and buy a trick.

I feel I should state, I'm not a member of any magic circle or internet magic forum and I have nothing against James Clark in the slightest. I just didn't enjoy his book is all.

At time of writing, Derren Brown is in the middle of some TV specials which will no doubt pique people's interest in this subject. Those wishing to learn would be wise to avoid this book as an introduction, there simply must be better texts available.

The two stars are for effort and the inclusion of a DVD-ROM disc showing some of the tricks. Must be said though, even the girl in the DVD doesn't look too impressed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to say 20 Oct 2012

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
While this book is a good start to understanding mentalism, it is a little missing in places???? It is a good read and does cover the basics, but a lot of the illusions do require a level of skill still a little higher than the title "Dummies" suggests.
Having said that, the author does come across as very passionate an knowledgeable, with an obvious love of what he does.
Altogether a sort of positive review. Good for the author, average for the content.

3.0 out of 5 stars Like a family wedding, its all relative. 3 May 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
How relatively new or old you are to mentalism or mind magic (there is a difference)will determine how many stars you give this book. My own background in magic and mentalism is pure interest and curiosity. I have never performed nor do I intend to perform in public. For someone like me this is a read that will save you time energy and money. I have spent hundreds on magic effects, tricks, secrets, books, dvds etc. I have looked at less than half of them simply because of work and family committments. My credit card is not MY flexible friend! The book outlines in a structured way most of the secrets that a hobbyist such as myself would need to know. Granted I had alot of the information already through previous purchases but for someone looking for one single extensive source on mentalism this is the book for you.

HOWEVER a cursory glance at some of the magic boards,in particular the one with the green backdrop that sells tea and scones, illustrates how excited and tormented some people can get about issues. There are calls for a boycott of the book, calls to purchase the book and give it a low rating, predictions of low sales of the book (a few hundred sales max apparently). You could be forgiven for thinking Clarke had just destroyed a cure for some terrible disease given all the hue and cry there. It is only a book! There are two full pages of acknowledgments at the beginning of the book which may ease some peoples minds. Admittedly there are very few direct credits attributed to creators of mentalism effects and techniques throughout the book and ethically this may be considered at the very least to be inappropriate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely pleased with this purchase 11 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback
I am not sure what these people with the negative reviews are harping about. Maybe they are magicians peddling their own book? I though this book gave a clear and honest view of the tricks that are commonly used, and I was thrilled with the explanations given, and what I learned. I am sure others will be also.

This is a big let down. Not at all up to the usual standard of Dummies books I've learned to love over the years. It's so badly written as to be almost useless. Read more
