There is a growing consensus that the mind can affect the immune system and over the past decade a new field - known as psychoneuroimmunology or PNI for short - has established itself to investigate the effects of the mind upon the immune system and vice versa. The authors of this exciting new area of research in the field of health psychology provide a comprehensive and detailed account informed by the latest research. Topics covered are stress and immunity, depression and immunity and assessment of the evidence that PNI effects are directly related to health.

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful but flawed textbook 6 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
Psychoneuroimmunology is a "new" and evolving discipline which essentially incorporates existing disciplines within an intergrated approach to the interelated functioning of mind brain and body.
This inevitably sets a challenge for anyone wanting to write a short introductory textbook and this book doesn't entirely rise to that challenge.
Firstly in seeking to selectively explain the mechanisms of the immune system it could leave the non specialist reader bewildered and the more knowledgeable wondering why the authors have taken the approach they have.
Indeed reading a good overview book about the immune system would be a good idea before approaching this text or the entire discipline.
Secondly the wordy rather than diagrammatic approach would have been helpful throughout the book.
However the conclusions and questions asked about the discipline and the feet-on-the-ground examination of the subject is refreshing and insightful.
Overall a bold attempt but not one for the uncritical beginner or non specialist who may not find this as helpful as they would like.
Sorry!
